Jubilee Tip #2 - Stay Central to One Location

by Hopkid Written Jun 2, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In 2005 the Jubilee had over 40 venues spread out over 10 or 12 main areas. There is only 30 minutes between sets so you don't have a lot of time to get to the next venue. My suggestion is to pick one of the main areas and choose your venues and the bands you want to see from among the venues in that area. For example, the first 5 shows we saw were all in the Old Sac area at 4 different venues. 30 minutes was plenty of time to get from one venue to the next and to get decent seats as well. In fact, of the 7 shows we saw on Friday, we sat in the front row for 5 of them. Yes, there are free shuttle buses but they don't run nearly often enough and will likely not get you to the next spot until the middle of the next set. Ideally, stay in one venue and catch the bands that will play there that day. No moving around required unless you want to upgrade as people in the choice seats leave. Plus it's a great way to meet new people as it is likely that the folks sitting next to you are doing the same thing!

Keep in mind that during the course of the weekend, each band will play at venues in more than one of the main areas (e.g., Old Sac, the Convention Center, the Red Lion Inn, etc.) which will allow you to eventually see the bands you want to see. So don't fret if you decide you can't see a band because they're not playing in Old Sac during the time you're focusing your efforts. Catch them later at another location!

Fondest memory: Sitting in the first two rows at 10 of the 11 shows we saw; 7 of those were in the front row.

Jubilee Tip #1 - Go to the Firehouse Courtyard

by Hopkid Written Jun 2, 2005

Favorite thing: If you have the chance to go to the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, it can be difficult to decide what venues to hit and what bands to see. But whatever you do, be sure to see a performance in the lovely Firehouse Courtyard. The courtyard is part of the Firehouse restaurant in Old Sacramento and is dominated by two or three large, leafy trees, which is key if the weather is hot as it often is in Sacto during Memorial Day weekend. The shade provides a nice respite from the sun and the atmosphere and setting are the best of all the venues I've been to. Well, it's at least much better than sitting in a hotel conference room or under I-5.

The restaurant also serves a limited special Jubilee menu of food and drink which is a cut above the fair food available at other venues. Go in the early evening (or later if it's really hot during the day) and enjoy a concert al fresco. Seating is limited, however, so get there early and queue up and the volunteers will seat you as seats become available, which is a pretty regular thing so you shouldn't have to wait too long. The main drawback is the carry over sound from the nearby Firehouse Lot venue.

Fondest memory: Listening to the Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli inspired sounds of Pearl Django in the early evening. It was like we were in Paris. Really.

Favorite thing: Well if you enlarge this picture then you can read on the sign that there is a website
    called support this Tower Theatre.
It must be very difficult to upkeep such a large and beautiful Theater; so I guess if someone can lend a hand there I bet it would be appreciated .
Who is that silly guy with his hands up anyways and what is he up to??
