Eating / Drinking: Downtown at Night

Although Midtown (see tips on that), the mixed commercial/residential portion of the old central core Sacramento just east of downtown, has long dominated nightlife, with nightclubs, bars, eateries, dessert places, etc., downtown has much to offer, too, and it has really picked up in this regard since the late 90s. This is especially true along K St and J St east of 9th, but also for the general core area around the Capitol, especially along its northern edge. There are many places to eat and cocktail lounges and bars in this area. K Street is also home to the lovely historic Crest Theatre and the nearby Esquire IMAX theatre. Although some might be a bit trepidatious about it, and there are some streets that are very dead at night except for homeless, it is usually quite pleasant and safe to walk around and explore the area at night, with some neat views of the streets (see my travelogue of downtown at night) - especially the area right around the Capitol, J, K, and L Streets, and from 9th Street east. Once one gets to 20th, then one reaches Midtown, also.

You may know that the US sucks for nightlife, as we are under the impression that it should end at 2:00am and Sacramento is no exception. If you're in Old Town, go to a Bar called Fanny Ann's. The bar is cute (the bartenders are usually cute too!)they serve great greasy burgers and fries, yummy drinks and a good assortment of draught beer. There is dancing on the lower level and the top three are for milling about and socializing. Good atmosphere, fun and relaxed.

Dress Code: tank tops, cargo shorts and flip flops or you can 'dress up' and wear jeans or a casual sundress. the key is informal informal informal.
