Second Saturday: Second Saturday Arts Walk

    by TooTallFinn24 Updated Aug 11, 2012

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Second Saturday is an arts and music walk that happens on the second Saturday of every month in midtown Sacramento. It started as an arts walk a couple of years ago but now has grown into a variety of free music venues, arts and crafts and even food. A few days before the monthly arts walk the Sacramento News and Review publishes a list of all the events that will be happening on Second Saturday in its weekly edition. The Arts Walk begins at 6 p.m. and lasts to at least 10 p.m. Consequently that is why I chose it to be a night life item.

This Saturday in August, 2012 there was a large group of mostly young or middle age folks strolling around to check on the art galleries that were having showings as well as checking out some of the music events.

The events that place throughout all of midtown Sacramento but the main action is on 20th Street between I and K Streets when I was there

Dress Code: Come casual or dress up just a tad if you are going to view one of main art exhibits on the art walk.

Crest Theatre: Gracefully Restored Downtown Sacramento

    by TooTallFinn24 Written Aug 9, 2012

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Crest Theater has been a symbol of downtown Sacramento long before we moved to Sacramento. Its elegant marquee reaches above the building and at night the bright neon takes one back to another time when all movie theaters had similar enhancements.

According to the Crest Theater web site there has been some form of theater on the site for 100 years. The first theater was the Empress primarily a place for vaudeville acts and the second the Hippodrome started as a vaudeville showcase but was later converted into a movie theater.

The interior of the Hippodrome was significantly remodeled beginning in 1946 and the Crest opened for the public in 1949. It continued to showcase new films until 1979 when a variety of factors forced it to close.

In 1986 and again in 1995 the Crest received substantial rehabilitation. The latter work helped restore the theater to its splendor in the 1940's. Today the theater holds a variety of events from recent films to a wide venue of traveling entertainment acts. It is also available for parties and fundraising events.

A few years back I went and saw Lucinda Williams at the Crest and the sound was excellent. So when visiting Sacramento stop in and see the Crest to admire the interior and maybe see some entertainment.

Dress Code: This is a theater and dress code is casual.

Sleep Train Arena: Kings: Going, Going, Staying, May 2013

    by TooTallFinn24 Updated May 19, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Attending an NBA game featuring the Sacramento Kings has been for years a great sporting event to witness locally. Despite their generally poor records, folks like myself, flocked to the ARCO arena about 10 miles north of town to watch them play. In 2013 nose bleed tickets can be secured for as little as $ 7 a game and on most nights the arena is half full at best.

    HISTORY

Sacramento has only one highly recognized professional sports team. The Sacramento Kings arrived in Sacramento as a National Basketball Association (NBA) team in 1985 having moved from Kansas City. The stadium known for years as Arco Arena was a very popular place for years to come see one of 40 plus games against other NBA teams.

However in recent years things deteriorated. Beginning in 2010 the Kings ownership the Maloofs became frustrated by the lack of progress towards an arena and dwindling profits from other businesses, they tried for an immediate relocation of the franchise to Anaheim. While that effort failed in February, 2013 the NBA Commissioner announced that a group of investors from Seattle had sought to buy the team and move it to Seattle. While a group of private investors in Sacramento has made a counteroffer a decision of what to do remains undecided as of mid March 2013.

UPDATE: Last week the NBA Board of Governors voted 22-8 to reject a move by some Seattle investors to move the team to Seattle. The Maloof family sold the team within the next 48 hours to an investment team from Sacramento. Kudos to Mayor Kevin Johnson and his team for making this happen!

Dress Code: Folks dress in all sorts of garb including team jerseys, purple hair and usually quite casually in attending Sacramento Kings games.

Various Clubs & Eateries: Midtown Sacramento

by WulfstanTraveller Written Dec 30, 2008

Midtown Sacramento is actually the most hip and lively part of the city actually. This is the old heavily residential, but mixed residential/office/commercial area of the city on the eastern edge of downtown. It is roughly the area east of 16th St and west of 29th St and the Capital City Freeway/Business 80 and north of Bus 80/Hwy 50. This is probably the primary area for nightclubs, bars, and many eateries from cheap to expensive and area of it are lively well into the night.

Many places in particular are on or near 20th St, which runs north-south near the railway tracks. This area includes clubs like Faces, the premier gay-lesbian-bi-transexual club for the whole region but also a place where anyone can go actually. The corner of Capitol Ave and 20th is crammed with several eateries, including the great, inexpensive, family-friendly Jack's Urban Eats, the fancy, sophisticated, non-kid-friendly Waterboy, and Rubicon, a brewpub.

Tower Theatre: Sacramento's Other Art Cinema

    by Tom_Fields Written Feb 15, 2007

In addition to the Crest, Sacramento has another venerable old art cinema. Since 1938, this theatre has been showing movies--making it the longest continuously-running cinema in the city.

Dress Code: Casual, come as you are.

Esquire IMAX Theatre: Sacramento's IMAX Theatre

    by Tom_Fields Written Feb 15, 2007

Any major city today has at least one IMAX theatre, and Sacramento is no exception. This one is downtown, near the Crest Theatre. So you can take in a show at each one in a day.

Dress Code: Come as you are.
