South Park neighborhood...BUNGALOWS!!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • We toured some neighborhoods that my son has been watching....loving bungalows as he does and growing up with an architecture nut. South Park has been the up and coming place recently. Used to be run down and worn out, but now the revival has taken hold. There are gorgeous bungalows to be saved there. Many are already restored and truly lovely. That Prairie Style is also prevelant throughout the area...lots of Arts & Crafts...creative stone work...stucco....some knockout doorways and stained glass. Guess you have to be an architecture buff to enjoy driving around looking at this sort of thing. If you are as crazy as I am....please visit my travelogue for more pics of this interesting neighborhood.

Information / Sources: Downtown SD Map
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a map showing the downtown area, Coronado Island, the SD Zoo, Hillcrest and Old Town. Just to give an idea of the distance, from the Gaslamp (Streets colored in orange) Quarter to Old Town, it is about 3 1/2 miles. From the Harbor to the SD Zoo it is also about 3 1/2 miles.

North of Interstate 8 is Fashion Valley Mall, Mission Valley Shopping Center and Hotel Circle. West of Interstate 5 is the airport. North of downtown and West of Old Town is Hillcrest.

Heritage Park Senlis Cottage ~ interiors

The Senlis Cottage was built for Eugene Senlis in 1896. He was an employee of the San Duiego pioneer horticulturist, Kate Sessions. (we met her on another tip about Balboa Park). This is a typical example of a home for working-class people. It now houses the Park Ranger office and rest rooms as well as the museum exhibit space. It seems funny to me to visit these historic sites...homes like this one considered so old. We moved out of a house built in 1895 to go to a house built in 1763...so it's hard for me to think about them as museums.

    Historic missions of San Diego
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a number of missions scattered around San Diego. I wish I could take a guided tour of all of them. The architecture is old Mexican stucco with arches and the grounds are beautiful and tranquil. Try to slip in to at least one while you are on your visit. Hopefully they will always be preserved.

    La Jolla: La Jolla
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yubert told me that this should be pronounced as "LA-HO-YA" This supposed to be a Must-See recommended by VTers in the forum. And I must say, very true, this place is the MOST BEAUTIFUL place in San Diego that one cannot miss out. Wild sea lions taking their afternoon nap on the beach, squriels asking for junk food, peaceful walk, deep blue color sea with white waves hitting on cliffs... I can walk around here for hours not feeling boring looking at the nature.

    Legoland
  • Tip Rating:
  • Why nobody put Legoland as "must-see"? Pretty fun actually, although those kids gave me an eye when I queue up the airoplane behind them, and the doorman asked me: are you alone? Well... yes, I didn't bring any kids with me, can I get in? lol

    Balboa Park: Balboa Park (Con't)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Balboa Park is made up of more than 1000 acres and offers fifteen museums, various gardens, arts and international culture associations. Unfortunately, it was Monday, by the time we arrived here, most museums and gardens were already closed. We only managed to took some photos of the brilliant seasonal flowers, and magnificent Spanish Colonial Revival buildings in this urban park.

    SD Zoo: San Diego Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The zoo is very impressive. With 4,000 animal inhabitants, San Diego zoo rank top one among all zoos in the world. Besides familiar animals, we found seldom-seen creatures such as koalas, tree kangaroos, ant eater, white wolf, etc. It is also a botanical garden with more than 6,500 plant species. In fact, some of the plants are more exotic than the zoo's animals! This leopard here have been trained like a cat, so cute!

  • Adams Avenue Antique Row - San Diego
    Adams Avenue Antique Row

    %L[http://www.gothere.com/AdamsAve/
]Adams Avenue is well known throughout San Diego as the location of many, funky coffeehouses, a place to hunt antiques, its many bookstores and for it's cozy street faires. The section of Adams Avenue that is suggested here is about thirty-nine blocks which run through the communities of University Heights, Normal Heights and Kensington Park.

In recent years the term "Adams Avenue Antique Row" has been adopted to describe the 20 or so shops that sell used goods, some genuine antiques and many collectables along Adams Avenue.

Serious collectors may not be so impressed with the items offered and the prices seem, to me, not to be very competitive. However, for those who love browsing used stores looking for unusual items or those who want the nostalgic feeling of searching for a fantastic find in an out of the way place, Adams Avenue is just right for you.

Books are my thing and there are plenty of shops that offer first editions, various genre collectables and some new books as well. Over the years I have spent months worth of hours in these shops and even I attended a few writer's workshops on Adams Avenue, back-in-the-day.

    Note: San Diego City Neighborhoods

So many people ask about neighborhoods of San Diego because they are planning to move into the area. So, I've decided to add tips of various neighborhoods in the city of San Diego that don't have their own VT page as Hillcrest and La Jolla have. I'll try to give a general idea of the place as home and what may attract a visitor to the area.

    Kensington Park:

Located about 6 miles northeast of downtown, the boundries of Kensington are Interstate-15 to Fairmont Avenue west to east and from El Cajon Boulevard to Interstate-8 south to north.

The main business street of the Kensington Park is Adams Avenue, which is well known throughout San Diego for it's neighborhood coffeehouses, restaurants used bookstores, antique/secondhand shops and most of all for the Adams Avenue Street Faires that are held throughout the year.

Kensington is at the east end of the neighborhoods along Adams Avenue and it is one of the oldest and most attractive. The prices of homes/rentals are higher in this area but well worth considering. The residential streets are winding and full of Spanish style homes, most with lovely well-kept yards. There is a strong sense of community here.

Many long time residents are known for instigating get-togethers and community type activities, such as a local parade for the kids or barbecues in the park on major and minor holidays. This is a community of people who like to jog, walk their dogs and ride bikes.

    Kensington Coffee Company

Now called San Diego Coffee Company At Kensington!!

There is a new Starbuck's on the corner across the street but San Diego Coffee Co.@ Kensington is still a favorite meeting place of mine. Coffees, Teas, Pastries and Lunch Fare is offered and served well into the evening. Everything I've tried was very tasty. It has just been renovated and is a truely neighborhood friendly place for pet owners.

While waiting for your order to be filled you'll notice, on the counter, a big bowl of dog biscuits, take one, they're free. Outside on the small "sidewalk cafe" section there is a doggie waterdish next to the hose for your thirsty pup. Along the wall, next to the tables are plaques in loving memory of favorite neighborhood dogs.

    The Ken Theater

Originally this was the old neighborhood theater. It is still in business. However, it now offers Independent films--read foreign/artsy--that aren't usually shown at the major movie houses. So, if you are a fan of the unique film, this is a place you might be interested in coming to while on vacation.
