The guys who work the door at Onyx are INCREDIBLY RUDE. They also FAIL TO HONOR AGREEMENTS with events in the downtown area. I went to Monster Bash 2008 and Onyx was listed on the brochure as one of the local clubs that had free admission until 10pm. When we got to the front of the line, we still had 20 minutes before 10pm and they were trying to make us pay $10 cover.... even after showing the guys at the door the brochure and after they read it (supposedly) the still insisted on the cover. To say the least - ONYX management does not care about its patrons. It was HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING.
This club used to be just the Onyx Room, now it includes the upper portion on the street level called "Thin." So it's pretty much two clubs in one.
Onyx room is located in the basement level. You first walk into a posh loungy area. The other portion is located behind the lounge and that's the dance area. That doesn't open up right away until the lounge gets packed. Maybe 11pm. (Friday and Sat nights.) The drink prices are pretty stiff, but that's to be expected. The bartenders have never had a chip on their shoulder like it is in other clubs.
The music in the Onyx room is mostly hip-hop, which I wish they would mix it up with a little more dance and occasional techno.
"Thin" is upstairs and you can smoke outside on the patio or go inside to the lounge. It's a good break to get away from the busy dancefloor. People are dressed pretty well here, so that tends to keep the Bert and Ernies (military) people away (which is to my liking.)
$10 cover, and a line does form on Fri and Sat. Good place to have a martini or have a smoke and people watch on the street.
Dress Code:
Dress to impress. No Sneakers.
