Great for general hiking. Not so great for trail running...certain areas though; not Cowles Mtn. Search for on google for Cowles and follow directions. Pretty easy to get to ; always parking. Great views of San Diego; enjoy.
This is an excellent chance to get out of the city and enjoy a change of pace. This park is a haven for wildlife and has some interesting historical attractions as well.
The summit of East Fortuna Mountain offers a splendid view of San Diego and the entire surrounding valley. On the creek is a dam built by Indian laborers for the nearby mission. The friars needed the water for irrigation and drinking. It was the first major water project in California.
Mission Trails Regional Park is a very large (one of the largest urban parks in the state) park in the city of San Diego. Most of the park is kept in its natural state with hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking trails over a very large area.
Fairly recently, a very nice visitor's center was built along the only paved road of the park , Father Junipero Serra Trail (The only other paved road is the lake road around Lake Murray). This is a great place to visit and learn about the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.
There's also rock climbing and a campground in this park (Kumeyaay Lake Campground can be reached at (619)668-2748). Plus, there's a very pretty lake called Lake Murray where you can fish, boat, skate, ride bikes, or jog. I also recommend a hike up Cowles Mountain to an elevation of 1500 Feet to where you can get a great view.
I promise to have some pictures in a little while for you to see.
Mission Trails Park,4 miles East of the Stadium on mission george rd. after the Jackson intersection.
Lots of oak trees and where Indians used to grind acorns. nice visitor center- 5 million dollars for what??? lots of mnt. bikers and rock climbers abound.
Drive around mission hills- lots of overpriced realestate- good architecture.
Steven Birch aquarium is pretty good.
Good view from Mt. Soledad- La Jolla.
Windensea- good beach- near La Jolla.
Antique mall store on island and 7th st- lots of overpriced trivial junk.
Imperial Beach near mexico has the best deal for beach vacation renting prices,
Mission Trails Park and Interpretive Center is a great place to go early in the morning. Nice place for a hike and some bird watching before the other attractions in San Diego are open. In the photo you can see the old dam that was built many years ago. More photos of this beautiful natural area are in my travelogue.
