Filippi's Pizza Grotto: Restaurant in a shop

Very funny restaurant, we had to go through a grocery store to get inside! Pic 2: My sister in law and my second cousin in front of the store / restaurant entrance. On pic. 3 they are waiting to be seated, the waiting line is in an aisle in the shop :-)

We sat in the nicest of the three parts, small and cozy with paintings on the walls and red and white table cloths. The humans had pizzas and pastas, I had bread and read wine. They paid 19 dollars each for lots of food they could not finish, and more than one drink each, like wine, beer and cooffee. Good for them I was there to help them!

Filippi's Pizza Grotto: Authentic Italian meals

    A delicious meal

Part of a family-owned chain of Italian restaurants. Service at Filippi's is fast whether choosing to dine in or order food to go. The Filippi family has served San Diego since 1950 and is proud that their food product is consistent and always enjoyable.

Favorite Dish: Pizza is always popular at Filippi's and comes in three sizes and 15 regular choices, but they also have five Filippi's Special pizza options. We ordered pizza but wanted different things, so LJ had 1/2 Vegetarian (black olives, mushrooms, green peppers and onions) while I had 1/2 Meat Lovers (pepperoni, ham, sausage, mushroom).

Filippi's Pizza Grotto: Best Local Italian

I visit Filippi's every time I go to San Diego. It has been serving the locals since 1950 and is still family owned. There is a small parking area to the side of the building but you should be prepaired to find a spot on the street.
The meals are very generously portioned. I had a child's lasagna and still was stuffed.
The pizzas are what is generally ordered at Filippi's.
If you feel like shopping after you eat, take a stroll through the store on your way out (you have to walk through it anyway to get to the restaurant area).
I can't recommend Filippi's enough. The service, the food and the prices are all the best you can find in San Diego.

    Favorite Dish: Pizza

  • Filippi's Pizza Grotto: So good!

by ShempDeeLa Written Jun 1, 2004 16 reviews

I loved this pizza! It had a homemade taste and lots of cheese! We laughed because there was the option of ordering extra cheese and we couldn't imagine that much cheese! The spaghetti and meatballs looked really good also (the biggest meatballs I have ever seen), even the lasagna was huge! The food was very affordable for the amount that you get. The restaurant also has a market in it, which makes for very cool surroundings. It was great, I wish I could have some right now!

Favorite Dish: The pizza! But really, everything looked tasty.

Filippi's Pizza Grotto: Great food in Little Italy

Part of a family-owned chain of Italian restaurants. Service at Filippi's is fast whether choosing to dine in or order food to go. The Filippi family has served San Diego since 1950 and is proud that their food product is consistent and always enjoyable.

Favorite Dish: Pizza is always popular at Filippi's and comes in three sizes and 15 regular choices, but they also have five Filippi's Special pizza options. For something different try Lillian's Special All White Pizza with garlic, mozzarella, provolone and oil. Vegetarians aren't left out in this comfort-food haven; the Vegetarian Special has cheese, mushrooms, onions, black olives and bell peppers. Sandwiches are traditionally Italian and can be served hot or cold. The Meatball with mozzarella and bell peppers is a local favorite. Pastas include Spaghetti, Ravioli, Lasagna and manicotti. Can't decide which to choose? Try the half-and-half where you can mix a half order of two different pastas. Light eaters can order a half order or enjoy the appetizers or salads.

Filippi's Pizza Grotto: Very very heavy pizza and more

Located very close to my work.
Pizza so good and gooey, you have you use a knife and a fork.
    Incredible prime rib too.
You will never go out hungry from this place and you will always carry out more than half your food.
great ambience, dark and muted place.

Favorite Dish: Sausage and pepperoni pizza.
    Antipasto.
Prime rib (Ask for the Filippi's cut) - Around $20 but can easily feed 3 persons.
