by travelgirl3 Located in the Embassy Suites San Diego Bay hotel in Gaslamp, this undiscovered beauty needs to be tried! Because we were staying in the hotel, we came down for dinner our first night, and were hooked, pardon the pun! We ate at the sushi bar, located in the cocktail lounge, but you can also order from the regular menu, and they just bring it across the hall from the restaurant. If you're staying at the hotel, you can even get sushi through room service.
Not being a big sushi fan, I ordered the Calamari appetizer, and have never seen such a huge plate of the tasty treats! We barely ate half, and aside from 1 piece of sushi, and a bowl of miso soup, that was more than enough! That night my husband had a couple of different types of sushi, all of which he enjoyed. He also had their clam chowder another night, and enjoyed it so much, he ordered it again for lunch the next 2 days! We had travelled to SD a couple of days prior to a conference, so once it started and I came home, he was on his own for a couple of days. He loved that chowder so much, he ended up there each day for lunch!! This was a awesome place. I had the BBQ rib dinner and it was huge. I think it took me three days to finish it. We all found something we liked on the menu. The service was great too. The only problem is that everyone likes to come here, so there was a line getting into the place. Then again it is right down the street from the Sports Arena, so the is probably why is was so busy. Yet, I think even the locals like the place. So if your planning to visit this place leave early and be patient. Hours Mon-Thurs, Sunday 10am-10pm Friday-Sat 11am-11pm

Miracle Mile Deli - Coronado, CA by travelgirl3 Located on one of the main streets in Coronado, Miracle Mile is a traditional deli, with so much more to offer. It's quite a large restaurant, with a small patio, and is extremely clean. The menu offered traditional deli items, as well as other types of sandwiches, burgers and salads. The day we were there for lunch, the also had a large roasted turkey, with all the trimmings. Their take out menu also offers a 'Grab & Go Picnic Pack or Beach Box' including any cold sandwich, 1 side, 1 soda and a brownie or cookie for $8. Great idea for taking to the Beach!
Ok, I know I should have ordered something more traditional, like a pastrami on rye, but sometimes, you just gotta have that burger! Of course, it came with fries, and the entire meal was absolutely delicious! We were there the day before Canadian Thanksgiving, so my husband had the turkey. Now he's tall and slim, but one of those people who can eat and eat and have nothing to show for it. So of course, as the server was loading his plate, hubby kept asking for more gravy, more potatoes, and a side of veggies. I happened to turn away, and noticed the gentleman in the line-up behind us. He was a large man, but even his eyes were bugging out, seeing how much food was on the plate!! But it was all very reasonably priced, and we each had a beer with our meal. I have heard that there are new owners at this restaurant. My tip is from June, 2008. I will be in San Diego, mid August, 2009 and will check out the "New" restaurant. My fingers are crossed as the old was great. THE FOLLOWING IS BEFORE OWNER CHANGE OVER.Casa de Reyes is an Old Town traditional Mexican dining adventure. It is an adventure because you can try your luck with a 60 oz. margarita (try sharing) if you dare. Music fills the air by mariachis that roam the large open air restaurant. This is a very lively part of Old Town. Casa de Reyes is located within the new Fiesta de Reyes, formerly Plaza del Pasado, which was formerly Bazaar del Mundo which moved across the street in Old Town San Diego. Keeping up with me? They seem to change names and owners quicker than the "Mexican Hat Dance". Not sure of the times and dates as of July, 2009 but the restaurant was open Mon-Thurs 10am-9pm, Fri-Sat 10am-10pm and breakfast was served daily until 2pm. There was usually a line of people waiting to sit at a table during the lunch hours. Not so sure until I can recheck it out.
Why is it that at Mexican restaurants you get served tortilla chips and a sauce that makes you crave more and more and you haven't even ordered food yet? Well, if you have a large Margarita drink in one hand, the other will find the chips. All foods at Mexican restaurants please me and Casa de Reyes is no exception. Choose what will suit you, but I enjoyed the traditional Enchiladas Suizas with pork that was on the menu. My wife had a special dish that was not on the menu that was made with mole sauce. As mentioned already, delicioso! Leave a Comment

Bakers Square has always been a favorite of my familes. It is a perfect place for family to eat at and have lots to select from the menu. This restaurant was right with the grounds of the hotel. The pool area was connected to the back of restaurant, so people could order food or drinks from the pool. So everyone enjoyed this place. We had breakfast here in the morning and it was all very good. Sunday-Friday 6:00am - 11:00pm Saturday 6:00am - 12:00am Leave a Comment

Caffe Tazza by b1bob On the way out, Debbie saw somebody coming out of this coffee shop with something like an iced coffee sundae with whipped cream. I got us both one. Mine tasted great. I can’t believe Debbie shared hers with Savannah and Holly. I would have made them get their own! Those two children were fighting over it. I was sure the frozen coffee would end up all over the back seat. Leave a Comment

Mary J's by b1bob Debbie and I went to Sean's office to "borrow" him for lunch. First, I checked my e-mail from Sean's computer and I had one from James Ayres. I boarded Sean's open-air Jeep "Dukes of Hazzard" style. We decided to take lunch at Mary J's in National City- a DIVE (a bad place) inside a dump (National City is one of the worst neighbourhoods in the San Diego area).
I had the Salisbury steak and salad (the latter of which I had to eat plain because they had no oil and vinegar- I hate creamy salad dressings) with a double order of fries. Sean took the Salisbury steak as well, but with mashed potatoes and English peas. Debbie took the ham and cheese melt with potato salad. Holly had mashed potatoes and gravy. Leave a Comment

Los Alazanes by b1bob I went to Los Alazanes for lunch. I had the combination platter (2 beef tacos, beans and rice with Coca-Cola). I talked with a guy named Roberto and he was vexed and miffed that they got his lunch order wrong. As I was leaving, he squirted the windows of the restaurant with hot sauce. I got my bohunkus out there quick because it would have been my luck if somebody mistakenly thought I did it. The Gaslamp Quarter jumps at night all along 5th Ave from Broadway Street to the north to Harbor Drive at the southern end by the San Diego Convention Center. One of the finest Italian Restaurants in all of San Diego is Acqua Al 2 (sister restaurant in Florence, Italy) with it's Tuscan flavored menu. Intimate with several open rooms allows one to feel cozy amongst so many diners. The back of the room has a guitarist playing romantic songs, two nights a week. Martin, the owner-chef, stands ready to fulfill your gourmet desires from a menu filled with tantalizing palate pleasers. The waitstaff is always attentive to your needs. If you are looking for delicious authentic Italian dishes, then look no further than Acqua Al 2. Lunch, Mon-Fri from 11:30am till 2:00pm and Dinner, nightly from 5:00pm till close. If you go, please say hello from travelgourmet. Buon Appetito!
My wife and I took one look at the menu and wanted to try all the dishes. The best alternative to trying all the dishes and not becoming too full to walk out afterwards, is the "Sampler Chef's Choice" that includes tastes and hearty ones at that, of five first courses, three second courses, and four desserts. Remember, that these are tastes not full dishes. The best part is that the first five courses are served one at a time, starting with a light pasta dish to the heavier flavored pastas. Purchasing a nice Chianti Classico bottle of wine is well suited for the "Sampler". As the saying goes, "When you dine, drink wine" is so true with Italian foods. After the meal, I must say that each and every dish presented was outstanding, which is a good sign for all the other menu items. So many dishes, so little time. View of the Star of India adds to the ambiance! by lmkluque This is a chain restaurant originating out of Vancouver BC and the British Pub menu is geared for touists--lots of choices so everyone in the family will be happy--but it is popular with SD residents as well as tourists. The Elephant & Castle is connected to the Holiday Inn SD- On The Bay and is a convenient meeting place while in the downtown area. I suggest eating--or just having a drink--on the patio. Enjoy the sea breeze, the view--huge white sails of the Star of India flapping in the wind--and the hustle & bustle of people reconnoitering a popular tourist area. Parking can be difficult, but the hotel offers "Valet Parking," at a price and there are a few parking lots near-by.
Bloody Mary, Potato Skins and Fish & Chips. :-) Leave a Comment
