Our Sunday lunch location was at a nice Pub on Coronado Island, just on the westward side of the San Diego harbour area. It was very pleasant to sit outdoors and enjoy a few warm rays of sunshine after a long and cold Canadian winter!

I had the BBQ ribs and a salad for $17 including the tip - not bad!

The Alamo: Real Mexican food...made the old fashioned way
  • Tip Rating:
  • This restaurant looks like it used to be an old Taco Bell...but don't let that fool you as the food is great, authentic and they provide huge portions. Now service may be a bit slow, but it's worth the wait. There is seating outside as well as takeout, so you decide.

We selected the combination platter (can't remember if it was #3 or #6) which included tacos (a shrimp taco, a fish taco and a ground beef taco with lettuce and tomatoes), Mexican rice and frijoles (or refried beans) and cheese. Remember to add either mild, medium or hot sauce to truly enjoy your meal. Believe me, when we finished this meal, we were both full!!!

    Phil's BBQ: Awesome BBQ
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This was a awesome place. I had the BBQ rib dinner and it was huge. I think it took me three days to finish it. We all found something we liked on the menu. The service was great too. The only problem is that everyone likes to come here, so there was a line getting into the place. Then again it is right down the street from the Sports Arena, so the is probably why is was so busy. Yet, I think even the locals like the place. So if your planning to visit this place leave early and be patient.

    Door!

My brother took me out for the lunch buffet one Sunday in February and we returned again with an out of town friend about a month later, Both times it was really great. We all think so! It was So delicious. OH, yes, really. And it was only $9.95 each, for all you can eat. Beautifully presented buffet with all the usual entrees I have had at other Indian buffets. Except, have you ever had Curried Banana?? I hadn't, and was it ever delicious. Wow. ( this yummy dish was not on the buffet the second visit, so disappointing...) The salad bowl was very fresh and had good greens.

Everything was great, believe me. I would go back here any day.

To drink, I had the regular ice tea, and it was raspberry flavored, unsweetened. I prefer unsweetened. Of course they had all the sweeteners on the table for us. the waiter refilled my tea a couple times and our water glasses. The drink was $2.50, including the refills.

The dining room and service was quite nice, too. We sat at table #18 (according to the check), which is the first one by the buffet and the water wall. Yes, there's a fake rock wall with wall gently flowing over it. Soothing sound as you dine. Narrow outdoor patio with a iron fence around it, which looked nice for a warmer day than February.

The vegetarian dishes were all great, the best! They had tandori chicken pieces, too, but I don't eat chicken. And pronounced it "wonderfully delicious." There was another meat dish but can't recall what it was...

    Chipotle Mexican Grill: BURRITO EXTREME
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Chipotle Mexican Grill is a chain of texmex bistro like self-service restaurants (a bit like Subway without sandwiches). They only serve burritos and tacos with different fillings. The food is very tasty and very cheap as well. A great place for a quick dinner if you are too tired to go out for a "real" meal.

I had a chicken fajita burrito with everything they offered in it (sauces, lettuce, cheese - even the rice). It was very filling and very tasty! And it only costed something like 5$.

La Salsa - Fresh Mexican Grill: SALSA HEAVEN

  • Eat as much salsa as you can - San Diego
Eat as much salsa as you can

This is a fast food chain with many restaurants all over California and some other states as well. We just needed a quick bite at Horton Plaza when we discovered its impressive "eat as much as you can" Salsa bar. My workmate Katharina took this slogan literally and had at least 10 portions of Salsa along with her Nachos.

I had classic quesadillas which were quite classic (just cheese in there, no messing around with tomatoes etc) which i like. The fresh salsa I got from the salsa bar was perfect with it. The whole portion costed around 5 Dollars which was a great deal I think!

    Bakers Square: Great Breakfast!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Bakers Square has always been a favorite of my familes. It is a perfect place for family to eat at and have lots to select from the menu. This restaurant was right with the grounds of the hotel. The pool area was connected to the back of restaurant, so people could order food or drinks from the pool. So everyone enjoyed this place. We had breakfast here in the morning and it was all very good.

The Venetian Italian Restaurant: Italian food only mama could make
  • Tip Rating:
  • My friend was checking out this location as a potential pre-wedding dinner spot. Well we should have known that it served excellent food because the place was packed...there was a 30 minute wait...and it was worth every minute.

Located in a neighborhood setting, the aroma of Italian food pleases your nose before you ever put anything in it. Not fancy on decor, but you truly feel at home here.

With your entree, you can either have salad or soup, so I chose the salad with ranch dressing. For dinner I had Pesto Pasta with grilled chicken (linguine with a homemade blend of virgin olive oil, pine nuts, fresh garlic, basil and romano cheese).

CASA DE REYES: THE FLAVOR OF OLD MEXICO
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Casa de Reyes is an Old Town traditional Mexican dining adventure. It is an adventure because you can try your luck with a 60 oz. margarita (try sharing) if you dare. Music fills the air by mariachis that roam the large open air restaurant. This is a very lively part of Old Town.

Casa de Reyes is located within the new Plaza del Pasado, formally Bazaar del Mundo which moved across the street in Old Town San Diego. The restaurant is open Mon-Thurs 10am-9pm, Fri-Sat 10am-10pm and breakfast is served daily until 2pm. There is usually a line of people waiting to sit at a table during the lunch hours. That must say something about the food. Delicioso!

Why is it that at Mexican restaurants you get served tortilla chips and a sauce that makes you crave more and more and you haven't even ordered food yet? Well, if you have a large Margarita drink in one hand, the other will find the chips. All foods at Mexican restaurants please me and Casa de Reyes is no exception. Choose what will suit you, but I enjoyed the traditional Enchiladas Suizas with pork that was on the menu. My wife had a special dish that was not on the menu that was made with mole sauce. As mentioned already, delicioso!

The Tin Fish Gaslamp: Casual seafood in the Gaslamp Quarter
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I was looking for a place to stop and get a quick meal before touring the Gaslamp Quarter and The Tin Fish fit the bill perfectly. It's located right next to the Gaslamp trolley stop, very close to both PETCO Park where the Padres play baseball and the Convention Center.

Join the line outside, order from the counter, grab your number and have a seat on the outdoor patio and do a little people watching while waiting to get your food delivered. Since San Diego has such good weather, it's lovely to be sitting outside while eating. I didn't notice if they had indoor seating although I think they might.

They are typically open Monday-Thursday for lunch (11 am - 3 pm) and Friday and Saturday for lunch and dinner (11 am-8pm) but they may be open additional hours depending on what's going on at the Convention Center & PETCO Park.

Although you can order a burger or a handful of items made with chicken, the menu specializes in fish-fish and chips, fried fish, grilled fish, fish tacos, fish burritos, chowders and soups made with fish. I ordered a fried calamari platter which came with a hearty 10 oz. portion of tender fried calamari ($11.95), waffle fries, cole slaw and tartar sauce. My meal with unlimited refill soft drink was less than $15 with tax.
