A small restaurant on the corner of Fifth Avenue and J Street. We stopped here to have lunch before going to the Hilton Gallery to see the San Diego exhibition of "here is new york: a democracy of photographs" The inside dining room seemed cozy and spacious at the same time. Of course we ate outside in the narrow gated area, as that is always my choice.
They also have a location in La Jolla:
737 Pearl Street
La Jolla, CA 92037
(858) 551-THAI
Update:
Seems that the La Jolla restaurant has closed. So their other locations now are:
NEWPORT BEACH
4001 West Pacific Coast Hwy. Newport Beach, CA 92663.
(949) 645-THAI
LAGUNA BEACH
1750 South Pacific Coast Hwy. Laguna Beach, CA 92651.
(949) 494-THAI
On their website they generously offer a few delicious recipes.
This too has changed. Now they offer cooking classes at the Newport Beach location on Mondays. So if in that area you might consider taking a class.
Favorite Dish: The lunch menu offers sixteen items starting at $7.95 for Vegetarian, $8.95 for chicken, pork or beef added. $9.95 for Shrimp, calamari or roast duck added.
My aunt had the Phat Thai Noodles, not very spicy and I had Rama, triple spicey. The delicious flavor pleased us both. The cook will make your meal as spicy as you like and the service was very friendly accommodating, which I always like.

This is another restaurant that I had chosen the first time because of a tip I read on VT. I returned there on my latest trip to San Diego three years later. The only thing that had changed was the interior decoration. Things that remained unchanged: the quality of food, the reasonable prices, the popularity of this restaurant, that is always rather crowded.
The only flaw: the service is so fast that you get the impression they want to get rid of you as soon as possible. Which is probably the way they manage to keep prices down.
Favorite Dish: A spicy soup is great to stimulate one's appetite and I recommend the Soup Royale. As main course I like very much the asparagus with shrimps.

If you're in the mood for thai food and you're around downtown San Diego, this place is a godsend. It's pretty easy to find as it's located in the main area of downtown. It has been pretty busy both times that I came here but my friends and I were seated pretty quickly. The food here is pretty good, and service is good too.
Favorite Dish: The crying tiger meal which are medallions of prime-cut charcoal broiled, ultra spicy beef intertwined with greens. The sauce that comes with this is to die for!
The Tom Yum soup is pretty good too.

Royal Thai Cuisine - Gaslamp location
Because it's right in the heart of the Gaslamp District, it's a great place to have dinner. Pricing is moderate, definitely not the most expensive restaurant on 5th, nor the cheapest.
I had a big birthday party here a couple years ago and the staff was great. Everything from setting the menu, service during the event and billing went smoothly.
Favorite Dish: Anything! I love Thai food and this is one of the best Thai restaurants in town. Definitely start with the Tom Kah Kai soup.
