Every year 17 million passengers pass through the San Diego International Airport, also known as Linbergh Field. They come and go on 600 flights a day, with 19 commercial airlines. It is the busiest single-runway airport in America. A statue in front of the airport depicts Lingerbh, both as a young boy, and as a man.
The San Diego airfield opened on Pacific Highway in 1928 and was dedicated in honor of pioneer aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. It was the first federally certified airfield that could serve all plane types, including seaplanes, earning it the first ever AAA rating for an airport.
As far as big city airports go, this is a very convenient one, being only a short taxi ride from the downtown area.

San Diego has a rare airport location. It is right downtown, next to the Pacific Ocean. You fly in so low over the buildings and Balboa Park, which is exciting & beautiful. A cab ride or the public transportation is easy to Downtown hotels or to transfer from the city bus to the Trolley system. Of course, many hotels have shuttle busses that pick up at the airport, as in many American cities.
If you have time, check out the art exhibits at the airport upstairs. They are always very good.

Of all the airports through which I have flown, San Diego's Lindbergh Field is closest to the downtown. In fact, on final approach, it looks as though you can reach out and touch the high-rise buildings. In fact, Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo are in the glide path. I flew there, and, man, were my arms tired :) Seriously, folks, I took Delta 1661 from Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky to San Diego. On the way back, it was Delta 198 to Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky.

Lindbergh Field is the major airport in San Diego and is served by all major airlines with direct non- stop service to cities in the U.S., Hawaii, Canada (Toronto), Mexico (Baja California) and the United Kingdom.
What a surprise - in contrast to many other USA cities - it's located very close to a downtown, at the Pacific Coast ---> easy and fast access to the city. Take a bus 922 or a taxi or a shuttle. Shuttle and bus service in and near the airport offers access to hotels and locations in and around San Diego.
Landing airplanes go from the inland, they take off towards the Pacific Ocean.

I don't care how you get here....JUST GET HERE IF YOU CAN!
FYI-Train station is downtown
Airport is about 2 or 3 miles north east of the train station close to the point loma area.
Best thing is to have a rental car. San Diego is spread out and you'll miss a lot if you are limited to the trolley or bus lines. The Trolly is better than the bus if you have to take public transportation...It'll take you through downtown, old town, mission valley, and soon through the college area. Buses will get you to the beach and other places, but it'll take you forever.

I flew into San Diego and had no problems getting in and out of airport.
The best way to get around San Diego is renting a car. If your not familiar with the city I would highly recommend getting one of those rental cars with the GPS system. I had one and it got me everywhere I needed to go as well as helping me find random things to see while driving around.
