    Fishing!

by lmkluque Updated Oct 2, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Some of my fondest memories as a child are days my dad took us fishing. I got to be pretty good at it, but have forgotten much of what I knew, except that it's a relaxing way to spend a day.

There are two types of fishing in San Diego, salt water and fresh water.

Salt water fishing can be done from a boat or off one of the various piers found along the coast of San Diego. H & M Landing is a company located near Shelter Island and offers fishing trips for local and long range fishing.

Their fleet of ships for rent include luxury yachts, private charters as well as open party tickets, which is the most economical.
Albacore, tuna, yellowtail, Reds, Rockfish, Sand Bass, Perch and Sheephead are just a few names of fish that can be caught.

Fresh water fishing can be done from the shore, or from a row/motor boat at one of our many lakes. Usually, the yeild would be bass, trout or the bottom feeder, catfish.

Equipment: If you haven't your own fishing pole or boat, they can be rented and be sure to find out if a license is required. At some of the lakes an extra fee is charged, so check it out before beginning to fish.

This photo is of Lake Dixon, a small man-made lake in Escondido. The whole county of San Diego is spotted with lakes of all sizes and at some, fishing is not all that is offered.

H & M Landing's address and phone number are given here as well as their website. If it is fresh water fishing that interests you, take a look at the City, County or State "Parks & Recreation" websites for more info.

    Mission Trails Regional Park

This is the largest park in San Diego and offers countless miles of hiking through low scrub desert and low mountains. All this literally in SD's backyard (it's about 6 blocks from my home). The Cowles Mountain loop is one of the more challenging hikes in the park but the reward is a fantastic view over San Diego.

    Padres Baseball @ PETCO Park

    by Phalaenopsis03 Written May 29, 2006

Admittedly, I'm not much of a baseball fan, but since I frequent San Diego enough, I thought it might be fun to catch a game at the fledgling PETCO Park during Memorial weekend. Cool thing I caught the game that I did too (Padres vs. Cardinals) since I got to witness the three longest home runs in PETCO Park history (see last photo). Albeit, the stadium is only two years old.

    The Gliderport

by acemj Updated Jan 28, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you're up for an adventure or are just a nutty thrillseeker like me, I'd suggest visiting the Torrey Pines Gliderport where you can take a leap from the cliffs in a paraglider or hang glider. It's $150 for a tandem (with instructor) jump on a paraglider (a parachute strapped to your back) or $175 for a hang glider.

If you don't want to take that kind of leap of faith, you could just come here to watch others having all the fun. There is a snack stand and some viewing chairs and it's really a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean and would be worthwhile for the view alone.

    Balboa Park

Balboa Park has some fields that are great for relaxing with a picnic basket or for something more intense like a game of football. Here we are posing for the camera. We picked up a game against some 12 year olds last time I was there and crushed them! ;-)

There are usually soccer games going on and people playing volleyball or ultimate frisbee.

    Golf

San Diego is one of the best golfing areas in the country with many public courses throughout the county. Probably the best known course is Torrey Pines, which is a PGA stop. Believe it or not, it's a public course, but you might have to arrange a tee time a month or two in advance.

  • Horse Racing at Del Mar

by kcbrit Written May 14, 2005

Spend a day at the races July- September . Nice track, next to the beach. Trains run to the town of Del Mar on regular basis - Surfliner I believe. Approx 20 mins north of San Diego by car. Well worth the trip.
