One of the things that most amazed me on my first visit to balboa Park is the Organ Pavillion, is the largest outdoor organ in the world, with 3,500 pipes.
On wekeends during the summer, you can enjoy free concerts under the stars.

I love gardening, so Bilboa Park was anamazing place for me to visit. The sad thing is that most of the plants that grow in this beautiful, formal garden are mostly not hardy in England. It was warm, bright the air full of beautiful scents (especially the lavenders) - a wonderful example of formal gardens and beautiful architecture. It's easily accesible via theSan Diego bus tour (see travel tips) and well worth a visit.

One of the nicest parks anywhere. Not only is there a lot of green space and fields for relaxing or outdoor recreation, but the park is also a cultural hotspot with a number of museums and and art galleries and it's even home to the world famous San Diego Zoo. The Spanish-style architecture of the Prado is also excellent and the setting is perfect for enjoying the wonderful weather in San Diego.

Balboa Park is a nice place to take a stroll and look at Spanish architecture. I came here several times on my trip just to sit and have lunch or sit in a quiet place to write in my travel journal. The Park is home to many museums which you should know are not really open on Mondays. The Museum of Man was quite interesting. You also have to have a meal in the Prado Restaurant which is superb.

Balbo Park is a huge array of museums, gardens, theaters, restaurants, shopping, recreation, and a zoo. There is everything imaginable for everyone of all ages to enjoy here. There is a vistor center located in the House of Hospitality. So if your ever bored, just ventured down here and I am sure you'll find plenty to do and see;-)

We came here a couple of times. WIt h our friends who live locally we looked around the House of Pacific Relations which are open every Sunday. Balboa Park has 15 museums and on Tuesdays some of them are free (Check locally). Also the San Diego Zoo is housed here too.

A nice way to spend a day, & you need a day to get around everything.

The old Globe

I was very suprised to find a Globe Theatre in Balboa park - "The old Globe". It didn't really quite fit here but it's nice to see one again. It's not as nice as the one in London though - it's a bit "plasticy". However, it's much older than the one in London. It was built for the California-Pacific International Exposition in 1935.

My favourite part of San Diego was Balboa Park and its great buildings. Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit any of the many museums or the famous San Diego zoo but we had a look around the park's main street El Prado nevertheless.

Most of the buildings in Balboa Park were built for the Panama-California International exposition in 1915 and 1935 in a spanish moorish style. They are sourrounded by big trees, colourful flowers and the free trolley riding by from time to time.

All the Museams

If you're in San Diego for a long time note that the museams in Balboa Park are free on certain Tuesdays (they rotate weekly), just ask in the information office for the details. The ranger tours are great if you manage to catch one (it took 4 Sundays of trying for me - they are a bit stretched and if something comes up, then the tour is cancelled at NO notice).
