Hotel Del at Christmas- Coronado
The Hotel Del on Coronado is amazing in and of itself, now imagine it covered in white light. Yes, come December ever edge of that amazing hotel if framed in white Christmas lights. On December 24, 1904, the Hotel del Coronado unveiled the world’s first electrically-lighted, outdoor, living Christmas tree. 100 years later, The Del continues its tradition of illuminating the season with holiday magic. That isn't it. Go inside to see a HUGE Christmas tree, amazing music, smell the holiday smell, and experience the experience. It's enough to turn any grinch into an elf.
Hotel Del Coronado
The Hotel Del Corondo is THE must see stop in Coronado, a fabulous old white beach resort with red roofed turrets, towers and cupolas that opened in 1888. If you are like me and unwilling to fork over $300 or more per night for a hotel you can still check out the beach, have a drink or a meal in one of the many restaurants or outdoor patios overlooking the ocean, have a look at the grand old lobby or find the display on the history of the hotel down near the shopping.
Back in it's heyday it was host to at least 10 US Presidents, part of Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon was filmed here and it's rumored that the King Edward VIII met Wallis Simpson here, she was a Coronado divorcee whom he eventually abdicated the throne for.
And what historic hotel would be complete without it's own ghost, Kate Morgan was found dead on November 29, 1892, a suspected suicide although many other theories have been tossed about. Guests have spotted her spirit every since.
Hotel del Coronado
Actually, if I had to pick a favourite activity for San Diego - it would be the Hotel del Coronado. It is the largest all wood building in the USA, constructed in 1888 as a luxury hotel on the Pacific Ocean. We only had a short time to tour parts of the hotel on our Trolley tour of the city but, what I did see, was amazing! The opulance of the dark wood interiors, the well manicured grounds, the fantastic ocean view, etc. This location has been used by various Presidents to host visiting royal guests and I would say that it was definitely up to the task!

SOME LIKE IT EXPENSIVE
Hotel del Coronado was established in 1888. Back then it was the first luxury hotel in Southern California.
Over the years it became famous mainly because of its visitors. It claims that 10 US presidents and one English king have stayed there. "Some like it hot" starring Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis was filmed here in the 50s. Charles Lindbergh was honored at the "Del" after his successful trans-Atlantic flight. And the hotel even has a residence ghost - the one of Kate Morgan who 1892 checked into the hotel - but never checked out again....

Historic and Haunted
Anyone's who's seen "Some Like it Hot" will remember that the majority of this movie was filed at the Del. (That's what the locals call it.) But even if you're not familiar with this wonderful movie, you can appreciate how unique looking this hotel is. It's a massive wooden structure with a distinctive looking cupola. There's also a huge courtyard where many balconies look on to with beautifully tended gardens and a gazebo. Aside from this you'll find several restaurants, shops, pools, and villas. In short, a luxury resort.
Frankly, I think I'd be frightened to stay there since I've heard it's haunted. That plus the fact that I could probably never afford it....

The Hotel Del
Even if you are not going to stay at the hotel you must at least visit it and admire the grand beauty and history of the building. Its actual name is the Hotel del Coronado but San Diegans all know it as the Del.The hotel, built in 1888, is right on the beach and it is a beautiful white sandy beach, indeed!
The hotel boasts 5 great restaurants and there are many other shops and markets to get food at almost any time.

Cross the spectacular Coronado Bay Bridge and you're in the tranquil seaside resort town of Coronado. The most famous landmark here is the striking red Victorian roof of the Hotel del Coronado, or simply the "Del", frequented by many celebrities of yesteryear and today. Rumor has it that this place is haunted.
The world famous Hotel Del
The Hotel Del in Coronado is a wonderful place to site see. The architecture is totally unique. Red Stucco with towers peaking out everywhere. This is also pretty ritzy, so it will make you feel like a movie star. Speaking of movie stars, this is where they filmed 'Some Like it Hot' with Marilyn Monroe. It's relaxing to walk the grounds of this hotel, which is allowed. There is some nice garden trails, and a beautiful pool. There is also an outdoor deck that serves food and beverages, so you can have a cold beer and watch the waves and feel special. Directly behind the hotel is a a beautiful beach. Including exploring Coronado, this can be a full day venture.
Hotel del Coronado
Hotel del Coronado--The Del--is a national historic landmark. It is a working hotel but you don't have to check in to appreciate its fine architecture, excellent shops and restaurants, and great beach. When you go there, at least try the ice cream.
To get there from Downtown San Diego, take bus #901, which crosses the Coronado Bridge and stops beside the hotel. You can also take bus #904 from Coronado Ferry Landing.

Coronado Island is actually a peninsula, but the best way to get there is by boat. The most famous landmark is the Coronado Hotel. Here the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII, met the divorced American Wallis Simpson; he later gave up the crown to wed her. And in 1958 Marilyn Monroe starred in Billy Wilder's movie Some Like It Hot. Monroe posed in front of a tree that still stands in the garden (visible in the fourth photo here, at right).

del Coronado Courtyard
The Hotel del Coronado had a very large enclosed rectangular courtyard amongst its many nooks and crannies.
If you have the money, this is where you want to stay at. Everybody that saw Some Like It Hot with Marylin Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon will remember this place
