Mingei International Museum is dedicated to furthering the understanding of world folk art. Mingei is a special word used transculturally for "art of the people." It was coined in the early twentieth century by combining the Japanese word for all people, min, and art, gei. Mingei refers to essential arts of people—living in all times throughout the world—that share a direct simplicity and reflect a joy in making, by hand, useful objects satisfying to the human spirit.
