Assorted Mexican Cantinas at Old Town
Old Town San Diego was a Mexican Bastion.
If you want to have a different experience of nightlife with an authentic native californian mexican flavor and away from the maddening crowd in Gaslamp district in Downtown San Diego, Old Town is the place as it hosts early Mexian California fare along with Italian, Japanese, Creole, Peruvian, and seafood plus it also hosts bars which are not noisy as in the gaslamp district. most of the restaurants and bars in the old town area opens at 11:00 am up to 12 midnight and even later on weekends.
Dress Code: casual wear is allowed, no shorts or flip flops.

Old Town Trolley Tours
One day tours like this are always a great option when you are trying to get an overview of a city, don't have a car, and only have a short period of time.
The tour takes you to a number of places around San Diego and the commentary is quite good.
My recommendations. If you start at Old Town, do Old Town AFTER the tour. You can spend quite a few hours at Old Town and it is a good night time option so do this last.

Old Town Trolley Tour
If you don't have lots of time, the Old Town Trolley Tour gives you a good sampling of what San Diego has to offer. The tour starts at Old Town and stops at the Cruise Terminal, Horton Plaza, Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego Zoo, and Balboa Park, among others. If you want, you can begin your tour at any of the stops that sell tickets. You can get off at any of the stops, explore the place, and then continue your tour by taking the next bus. The drivers are also the tour guides and they appear to be very knowledgeable.
I noted that in many of the stops, the line of people waiting to board the bus was very long. The driver had to call their office to advise them of the situation. At Balboa Park, for example, when we were ready to board the bus, we were told that there was a number of people already ahead of us. We were not able to board the next bus, but we were the first in line for the following bus.
You may buy tickets online at a 10% discount. If you buy your tickets just before boarding, you pay the full price of $32.

A great way to see San Diego is on an Old Trolley Tour. For $25 you get a 2 hour tour around OLD TOWN, HARBOR DRIVE (Maritime Museum), SEAPORT VILLAGE, HORTON PLAZA (big shopping centre), CORONADO (small island connected to San Diego by bridge, which was veeery windy crossing!), THE ZOO, and BALBOA PARK (where most of the city's museums are located).
You can get off at any of the stops are board again when you're ready. the trolleys run every 30 minutes and if they're full, they'll put on another trolley so you don't have to wait long. The trip would've been more enjoyable had the ticket allowed you an unlimited amount of stops all day, instead of a once-around trip. At $25 it's not cheap, so I would recommend you plan a whole day for the Trolley Tour, enabling you to get off at every stop. You can board at any stop in the trip, and you don't have to start at Old Town, which is stop number 1. If you're arriving into San Diego on Amtrak, board across the road at Harbor Drive.
My favourites on this tour were for starters the trolley itself and the conductors. Bad jokes, voice imitations and sing-a-longs. I enjoyed seeing the 'Hotel Del Coronado' where they filmed 'Some Like it Hot' and the island itself is beautiful. Balboa Park is also gorgeous but plan lots of time to see the museums and the park. You can take a free trolley around the park once you get there.
The trolleys run from 9am and run until aprox 4.30pm in winter and 5.30 in summer.
