This is the biggest and best zoo that I've visited--and that is saying quite a lot. It's good for an entire day's visit. Full of exotic, rare, and endangered species, this is a must-see. A great place for adults and kids.

I love animals, and what better place to get up and personal to some of the world's most fascinating habitants. The San Diego Zoo is world famous for its large selection of creatures big and small, but the star attraction must be the adorable giant pandas.

The zoo has a very succesful breeding program and has produced many giant pandas throughout the years, the lastest is Bai Yun's 4th cub, born at the zoo on August 3, 2007.

The San Diego Zoo is in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. It is one of the largest, most progressive zoos in the world with a large range of animals & species. The zoo offers a guided tour bus that covers most of the park. This is a great way to check out the park before you decide what animals you really want to go and see. There is also an overhead gondola lift that provides an aerial view of the zoo and is a quick way to move between opposite ends of the park. Apparently the zoo has the largest population of giant pandas outside of China, so they are the main attraction for sure, but there are many other cool animals to check out too.

If you also intend on visiting theme parks in LA like we did, you should definitely buy the Southern California City Pass. It entitles you to a 3-Day Disneyland ticket, and 1 day tickets to Universal Studios, SeaWorld and a choice of SD Zoo or SD Zoo's Wild Animal Park. You can purchase this from any of the parks. It's a great saving!

This zoo ist just huge and taking the bus tour first is advisable (10$)! Avoid going on weekends, too many people around.

Pandas, hippos, koalas, elephants, every animal you can imagine, but unfortunazely not every animal wants to be seen, so you may only be able to see half of the animals of the zoo!

Bring your own food!! Once again, the food is overpriced and awful!
    Adult single day: 33$

  • My Kids LOVED the San Diego Zoo

First of all, I'm not a big fan of Zoos. I'm not really sure why. Maybe because I feel like "you've seen one, you've seen 'em all". I am, however, a big fan of the San Diego Zoo. And my kids are BIGGER fans. Of all of the zoos that I've been to in my life, I think that the San Diego Zoo is probably the best. The weather was perfect (isn't always in San Diego) so that definately helped my less than steller attitude of zoos. It is a family zoo and one that I recommend for kids of all ages... even a kid like myself. I'm a penny pincher and always look for the deals. I think that the best rate for the San Diego Zoo is through this site - truestedtours.com . They also have some other really good deals in their San Diego section .

    The BEST Zoo Ever!

The San Diego Zoo has 4000 animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, and a botanical collection of 700000 exotic plants. I think this is the best and largest zoo I have ever visitied.
A trip to the Zoo is a whole day event. I think it is definitely worth it to buy the upgraded pass so you can have unlimited rides on the trams and Skyride. This goes double if you have children. After 5 hours of walking around a HUGE zoo your feet will be killing you and you will want to take the tram back to the exit.

They try for protection and animals reproduction in the crisis of the extinction in the world here.

Though the exhibited animals are splendid, but they animals should have a better place to stay ( We're both living together ) on the Earth.
    I really, really wish......

I haven't been to many zoos so I don't have many to compare to the San Diego Zoo. Never the less, it impresses the heck out of me. A huge collection of animals in what appear to my insensitive soul as very humane areas. Each animal is given plenty of space and close proximity to what it is used to in the wild.

Be prepared for a full day of walking if you want to see as much as possible. The zoo is huge and hilly. There is a guided bus tour which is a good way to see the highlights and get a feel for the layout. It takes about 40 minutes and costs extra.

Some of our favorites were the pandas, the koalas, the reptiles, and the hippos.

The zoo is in the middle of very scenic Balboa Park which has much more to see including many museums.

Open at 09:00 AM and closing depends on the time of year. Summers they close later.

The San Diego Zoo is famous for its work in the field of conservation particularly in relation to threatened species - and of course its longstanding links with China in attempting to preserve the Panda.
There is really far more to see than can be taken in on one visit but I would certainly go again and recommend it ti anyone with an interest in wild life. Outside SD there is the equally famous Wild Life Safari Park where animals live in more natural surroundings. Unfortunately on the day we visited it poured with rain and we saw very little of anything.
Here though are some of my photos from the Zoo

The zoo is situated in Balboa Park, which is home to several other museums as well. The zoo is well worth the price of admission and has some very exotic species in it. The zoo is lushly landscaped, which adds to the experience.

  • San Diego Zoo - Wild Animal Park Pass

by olhippy Written Apr 3, 2007

If your going to be staying with friends or if they live in the area, have them buy a Zoo pass for the year.
I'm not sure, but if they buy the pass through the mail, they may be able to order it in your name, as ID is required to enter the Zoo with the year pass.
This way you get your year pass plus a few guests passes and some discount coupons for the bus at the zoo.
The pass may also cover the entry to the Wild Animal Park which is only about 45 mile north of San Diego.
If not - they buy the pass and they can give you the free passes and go with them.
Cheaper than individual tickets even if you buy their year pass I believe.
Please check with your friends to see about this and if it still covers the Wild Animal Park entry.
Both the Zoo and Animal park on the same pass??

The San Diego Zoo is rated as one of the best in the world by many travel magazines and websites, and for good reason. This place is huge, it is like a small city, and believe it or not, it is very easy to get around, great directions. What makes this zoo unique is the incredible
variety of animals. Very rare species from all over the world. I have been to many, many zoos and this one has the strongest variety of animals, many of them I have never seen before.
I would come as early in the day as possible. The animals are more likely to be out and about, making for great pic opportunites. By noon, that hot sun keeps many animals in the shade and out of plain sight.

The last time I was there was in 2001. I love the SD Zoo. If you follow the winding paths, you can see every exhibit in the park. The park is designed so that the animals are close to being in their native habitats. The staff have also created a botanical garden inside the park with many aloes, pachypodiums, euphorbias to name a few. Pictures will be added soon.

Must see the Koala and Panda exhibits. I especially enjoy the REPTILE house and aviary.

    Wold Famous San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is a large animal preserve on the edge of Balboa Park in downtown San Diego. Certainly their most famous exhibit is the Giant Pandas, but during my visit, they were overrun with people and impossible to see, so I just moved right along. I did stop at the polar bear area, and I was very impressed with these massive beasts as they frolicked and played in the water. I got some great pictures of these guys. I also enjoyed the gorillas and monkeys.

Ticket are $32 for adults and $20 for kids, so plan to spend the day here if you come.
