Flight / Airport Info, San Diego
The San Diego International Airport is located quite near the city. For this reason, it's not exactly big, since there's only room for one runway. Several airlines still offer flights to San Diego, and direct flights are available from Canada, Mexico, Japan and the UK. There are only two terminals, with the bigger Terminal 2 handling all international flights. It's got several restaurants and shops. The airport can be reached using public transportation, but since it's so close to the city, I'd recommend hiring a cab to get downtown, especially if you're carrying lots of luggage.
This airport is under some serious construction so I thought it was an absolute mess flying in and out of here. There just isn't enough space for the arrivals and departures. Even with having status and waiting in a lounge I felt this airport was sub par and totally in need of an overhaul. Just trying to get to the gate to board was a mess of people crammed into a small space and trying to get by when our boarding group was called was a nightmare.

Welcome to San Diego!
Now that you arrived, you are wondering about Car rentals and Taxi services. To catch a cab or rent a car, just proceed up the escalator from the baggage claim area. It will lead you to the TAXI cue area and the shuttle bus pickup spot.
San Diego airport has an employee there managing the Taxi pick area, so you won't have to wait but a minute or two to catch a cab. It's awesome! If needing a TAXI after you arrive at you hotel or destination, I have listed a few Cab services on the bottom of this tip.
For car rentals, there are no on-airport car rental agencies. However, you can catch a shuttle bus to any and all of them with a 5-min shuttle ride. The car agencies run there shuttles ever 5-15 minutes, so there isn't that much of a wait. Shuttles are free, however if you have 10 bags and the shuttle driver has good customer service, I sometimes tip him a dollar or two. I feel it promotes better service for us all.
