FISHERMAN'S WHARF: The MUSEE MECANIQUE at PIER 45
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Musee Mechanique. hash all sorts of coin-operated entertainment machines from the past, it's fun to see all the old Machines There are pianos that will play songs, little figures that will dance, fortune-telling machines, and lots of old-fashioned folk-art -- most for only a quarter a piece.

It is located right next to the Submarine Pampanito and the Musee Mecanique is located here temporary un till a new location has been found.

It was late in the day and at the end of our wonderful Tour with Wanch & Annapet & Dulce ,and this was the last part we saw of San Francisco and it was well worth seeing it. The ExploratoriumThere were still some white Swans in the Lagoon around this magnificent structure and it should look fabulous during the day time I bet.

The location is Marina Boulevard and Baker street.

S.F. Port / Embarcadero: Take a long walk on a long pier

The weather has been fantastic in San Francisco this March. It brings everyone outside. We even have to head near the water - anywhere else in the City has been HOT! Along the Embarcadero (waterfront) are numerous piers for walking and relaxing.

This is a picture of a REAL pier on the waterfront. Unlike the FAKE pier 39 shown in my Tourist Trap tips. The white buildings in the background of this picture are on Treasure Island, a former US Naval Station. During Willie Brown's tenure as mayor of SF, he tightly controlled who could use the facilities and who could not. He would grant access to Treasure Island as a "perk" for his cronies only, which caused a major stir in San Francisco.

This is a classic San Francisco photo op from Alamo Square, located on Hayes, just east of Divisadero. Alamo Square is a patch of green located at the top of a hill in the heart of the city. The blend of Victorian houses with modern buildings is one of the striking things about this city.

Lombard Street: DRIVING DOWN LOMBARD STREET
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was a totally awesome thrill to go down the "Crookedest Street in the World". LOMBARD STREET has eight sharp turns, known as switchbacks, on a 40 degree slope. There are also stairways on both sides for pedestrians. We went down not once, but TWICE. What a blast!

Located in the Russian Hill District, the descent begins at Hyde Street.

    FISHERMAN'S WHARF: Fisherman's Wharf
  • Tip Rating:
  • The reason I didn't put this under "Tourist Trap" is that we had to come here fairly often -- to go on our ferry tours and to visit the Ghirardelli Factory, and I really didn't find it that bad. I actually sort of liked this place in a weird, twisted kind of way. I was kinda fascinated with the place, especially the street performers and the more creative ways they used to get money. One guy came up to me and gave me a "citation for smiling" -- started writing up a ticket and the whole thing. My fine: a "donation to a youth group". There was also a guy who disguised himself with a bunch of branches and sat on the side of the street. I thought it was a bush. (yeah, dumb enough to not think a bush was growing in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf). When we walked by, he jumped up and screamed "boo", inducing a loud scream from me, the intended victim. Of course, this is for the amusement of bystanders as well. Everyone had a good natured laugh, then he said, "now wasn't that laugh worth 25 cents?". "No" said my husband, and hustled me along. Ya gotta admit, these guys are pretty ingenious. If you are here later in the evening or early in the morning, the crowds are manageable, and it's one of those things you have to do, even though you know it's bad for you. Like I said, you'll probably end up here anyway if you're going to take the ferry to Alcatraz or somewhere else, so you might as well spend an hour. An hour, tops.
