BEACH BLANKET BABYLON: IT'S RAUCOUS, WILD, & FUN
  • Tip Rating:
  • I can't explain it much better than they do on their website: It is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. Now in its 29th year of sold-out performances, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON is an internationally acclaimed San Francisco institution. In addition to the more than 10,000 performances in San Francisco, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON has performed for audiences in its London & Las Vegas engagements. The show continually evolves in its hilarious parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs & adding new characters, songs, & send-ups throughout the year. The show's traveling version performs regularly for conventions & private groups from Tampa Bay, Florida, to Kaanapali, Hawaii. I can guarantee that you will laugh & have a unique experience in entertainment. Wednesdays/Thursdays at 8:00 PM Fridays/Saturdays at 7:00 & 10:00 PM Sundays at 3:00 (Matinee) & 7:00 PM Tickets - $25 - $75

THE ORPHEUM THEATER: BROADWAY SHOWS AT A BEAUTIFUL THEATER
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful, historic building - San Francisco
    Beautiful, historic
    building

San Francisco's historic Orpheum Theatre first opened its doors in 1926. The ornate interior has a vaulted ceiling & the building's facade was patterned after a 12-century French cathedral. To bring Broadway-caliber productions to the theater, new owners funded a $20 million renovation completed in 1998. To mimic the theater's original facade, the owners ordered new signage with a design straight out of the 1920s. A friend & I saw the Broadway show, FOSSI, at the Opheum. It was outstanding. Right now THE LION KING is playing. The Curran & Golden Gate Theaters also offer Broadway shows.

    Dressy is typical.

Not really a nightspot - more like an after work spot. The Wine Merchant is located in the San Francisco ferry terminal and has an unbelievable selection of wines. They also have a wine bar, which is very popular with the after work crowd.

After dinner, head to the Castro Theatre in the Castro District. Not only is this a theatre, it is a California historic landmark. Come and admire the Art Deco and Moorish style. In addition to old classic films, the theatre hosts wonderful Special Events. For a current list of shows, festivals and entertainment, go here: http://www.thecastrotheatre.com/calendar.html

Toronado: a beery shrine for all good pilgrims
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Toronado is one of the US’s great beer bars, noted around the globe to beer connoisseurs. They specialize in Northern California brews but have a healthy dose of both Belgian and German beers on tap as well. Of most interest to me were the three beer engines dispensing cask conditioned ales, all brewed in the Bay area. Doreen had the Back Prince Porter from Marina, California’s English Ales Brewery. It was a medium bodied porter with tan head and roasty chocolate malt palate. My Harvest Ale from Drakes Brewery was amber with a citrus hop aroma and floral hoppy palate. We also enjoyed the ESB, Damnation, and Denogenizer from Russian River Brewing in the Sonoma Valley. The place itself is a dark wooden affair with fairly loud music and is pretty crowded in the evenings. It’s not for the faint hearted. It’s much more enjoyable in the afternoon when it’s easier to get a seat, the music is not nearly as loud. There's an all day happy hour with most beers at $2.50 a pint. That saves you a couple bucks too.

Black seems to be the color of choice. Don't even think about pastels.

Beer / Wine Bars: constitutional happy hour blues
  • Tip Rating:
  • You wouldn’t normally be in this part of town but it’s well worth the walk if you like good beer at good prices. The happy hour runs from 2:30 to 5:30 when pints set you back only $3.00. They also have half price appetizers going. It’s quite busy and the horseshoe bar adds to the festive atmosphere. It’s got a bit of the warehouse effect with high ceilings and fixtures on display. We didn’t have anything to eat but the Watermelon Wheat did come with a slice of its namesake fruit as a garnish. I generally shy away from anything like this but it was refreshing and avoided any overt sweetness despite each batch having 400 lbs of watermelon in it! The Oktoberfest was a big malty brew that lacked the spiciness of a true Marzen. The Midnight Milk Stout was a nice coffee roast brew with just the right sweetness appropriate for the style, finishing off nicely bittersweet. The cask IPA was gravity dispensed offering nice lacework, a strong citrus hop component and floral hop nose. It was well-balanced and all too quaffable at 7.5%!

Very casual but you could be in a suit too as it's close to Financial District.

Information / Sources: Zam Zam's is under new ownership: you may enter!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The deal with this place is that the now dead owner of the place was nuts and EVERYONE in the city has a story. First things first: it was hardly open, and I mean like maybe 20 hours a month. Next important issue: he threw out 99% of the poor souls who were in need of drink. He ONLY served Martini’s you see, even though there was a full bar. And if you dared ask what kind, or can I have a beer, you were screamed at to leave right away. In 12 years I have been to Zam Zams only one time before this year. And here is why: My pal and I walked in and sat down at the bar. I was warned that I should ONLY order a Martini. So I, as nicely as I could, said: “What kind of martinis do you have?” To that I was told to GET OUT! I plan on doing a short film on this place, with short interviews. Because even standing out side smoking a cigarette, you can hear people as they walk by going: “Of my god, that’s the place with that crazy guy! I can’t believe its open!” However, they don’t know it’s under new management, so they dare not go in. Leave your story as a comment, you never know, you could be featured in a short!

“The Draw” Stepping into the Zam Zam is essentially stepping into the Casbar, circa World War II. Minarets, gothic windows and a resplendent Persian painting behind the bar makes the place seem like something that Lawrence of Arabia would stumble into after riding his camel all day. The beautiful wooden semi-circular bar hearkens back to the 1930s and is stocked with fine liquor, while the jukebox (filled with Frank, Ella, Louis and their ilk) plays nothing after 1955.” A classic review off the web, but it’s exactly true.

Information / Sources: Club & concert listings
  • Tip Rating:
  • There sometimes seems to be more club listing papers than there are actual clubs, but here are the tried and true ones... BAY GUARDIAN - The "establishment alternative paper" has been around since the 70's and is geared toward an older, more PC audience. Has news and progressive editorials, but also lots of club listings. SF WEEKLY - the SF weekly WAS a great paper - formerly the SF Calendar, it was a real voice of alternative SF. Then they sold out to a newspaper group specializing in cookie cutter "alternative" weeklies, and now it's basically a yuppie rag. The dot-commers loved it - full of smug, self-important, "we're so hip and rich and cool" righteousness. It caters to young, arrogant yuppies "slumming." We used to call them "Reagan Youth." Anyway, the plus side is you will find much more listings for trendier, dance-y type stuff. PINK SECTION (Sunday SF Chronicle) - Known mainly for it's movie reviews, it's great for those looking for more conventional entertainment like symphonies, art openings, larger rock concerts, Broadway-style shows and the like. Don't expect much in the way of club listings here. FLYERS ON TELEPHONE POLES - These are the best way to find out about local shows. They will mainly be put up by local musicians, not very far in advance, and you'll see a real city crowd.

Eating / Drinking: Good, solid beer
  • Tip Rating:
  • All the beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized and they always have around 7 beers on tap. The location is cool too, right where Chinatown, North Beach and the Financial District intersect. They've got great beer, good food, regular live music and an interesting history, so check out their website for all the details.
