I can't explain it much better than they do on their website: It is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. Now in its 29th year of sold-out performances, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON is an internationally acclaimed San Francisco institution. In addition to the more than 10,000 performances in San Francisco, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON has performed for audiences in its London & Las Vegas engagements. The show continually evolves in its hilarious parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs & adding new characters, songs, & send-ups throughout the year. The show's traveling version performs regularly for conventions & private groups from Tampa Bay, Florida, to Kaanapali, Hawaii. I can guarantee that you will laugh & have a unique experience in entertainment. Wednesdays/Thursdays at 8:00 PM Fridays/Saturdays at 7:00 & 10:00 PM Sundays at 3:00 (Matinee) & 7:00 PM Tickets - $25 - $75

 | | | | Information / Sources: Zam Zam's is under new ownership: you may enter! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The deal with this place is that the now dead owner of the place was nuts and EVERYONE in the city has a story. First things first: it was hardly open, and I mean like maybe 20 hours a month. Next important issue: he threw out 99% of the poor souls who were in need of drink. He ONLY served Martini’s you see, even though there was a full bar. And if you dared ask what kind, or can I have a beer, you were screamed at to leave right away. In 12 years I have been to Zam Zams only one time before this year. And here is why: My pal and I walked in and sat down at the bar. I was warned that I should ONLY order a Martini. So I, as nicely as I could, said: “What kind of martinis do you have?” To that I was told to GET OUT! I plan on doing a short film on this place, with short interviews. Because even standing out side smoking a cigarette, you can hear people as they walk by going: “Of my god, that’s the place with that crazy guy! I can’t believe its open!” However, they don’t know it’s under new management, so they dare not go in. Leave your story as a comment, you never know, you could be featured in a short!
“The Draw” Stepping into the Zam Zam is essentially stepping into the Casbar, circa World War II. Minarets, gothic windows and a resplendent Persian painting behind the bar makes the place seem like something that Lawrence of Arabia would stumble into after riding his camel all day. The beautiful wooden semi-circular bar hearkens back to the 1930s and is stocked with fine liquor, while the jukebox (filled with Frank, Ella, Louis and their ilk) plays nothing after 1955.” A classic review off the web, but it’s exactly true. | | | | Information / Sources: Club & concert listings | Tip Rating: | | | | |
There sometimes seems to be more club listing papers than there are actual clubs, but here are the tried and true ones... BAY GUARDIAN - The "establishment alternative paper" has been around since the 70's and is geared toward an older, more PC audience. Has news and progressive editorials, but also lots of club listings. SF WEEKLY - the SF weekly WAS a great paper - formerly the SF Calendar, it was a real voice of alternative SF. Then they sold out to a newspaper group specializing in cookie cutter "alternative" weeklies, and now it's basically a yuppie rag. The dot-commers loved it - full of smug, self-important, "we're so hip and rich and cool" righteousness. It caters to young, arrogant yuppies "slumming." We used to call them "Reagan Youth." Anyway, the plus side is you will find much more listings for trendier, dance-y type stuff. PINK SECTION (Sunday SF Chronicle) - Known mainly for it's movie reviews, it's great for those looking for more conventional entertainment like symphonies, art openings, larger rock concerts, Broadway-style shows and the like. Don't expect much in the way of club listings here. FLYERS ON TELEPHONE POLES - These are the best way to find out about local shows. They will mainly be put up by local musicians, not very far in advance, and you'll see a real city crowd. Leave a Comment Theme: Nightclub
