SF Streets: Union Street (in the Marina)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Union Street (in the Marina District)

Great place to watch the 'beautiful' people. The best of Union Street extends from Franklin to Steiner, then runs down Fillmore to Lombard.

Don't miss the clubby ambience of the Balboa Cafe on Fillmore Street (pictured here).

Sidebar: Balboa café happens to serve the best hamburger in the City, served on a crisp, hollowed-out baguette; think mushrooms, griddled onions, bacon, cheddar, Swiss, jack, even blue cheese!

Information / Sources: Clubbing in SF - continued
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are into Salsa, check out Cafe Cocomo (Thursday nights), Black Cat (Tuesday nights) and Roccapulco. there is also a club in the Mission called El Rio - they play Latin and International stuff.

Anyways these are just some suggestions. SF nightlife is decent but it kind of lacks the consistency, diversity and the variety of some other big cities I've been to (London, NY, Miami, Istanbul etc). To find out what is going on at any given time (and the addresses to all the places above) your best source is:

    Live Music: Feeling Blue?
  • Tip Rating:
  • This cozy and intimate lounge has a nice blue decor, a pool table, and plenty of candles. If you don't want to sit at the bar, you can also go "upstairs" by the pool table where there are ample seats as well. There are live jazz and salsa bands on the weekends

    Casual

    Red Room: Seeing Red?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Extremely red decor -- from the large red martini glass that dominates the bar to the funky bar stools. This small bar can get really crowded, even during the week. Inventive decor, mixed crowd, strong drinks. I think they're famous for their Cosmos, though one of the female bartenders has a definite attitude problem! Patrons have been known to share their M&Ms, as well as play with a motorized bunny sporting "alligator" teeth!

    Extremely casual

Johnny and Pounder take a much-needed break from the crowds to discuss their findings.

Or perhaps, Pounder was helping Johnny recover from his horrific experience with that Booby sandwich???

Or was it Johnny consoling Pounder on his *penalty interference* from those two women who pulled a "fast one on him?" Lessons learned, Dawg, lessons learned..........

Whatever it was, they were deeply engaged in conversation

I made our dear Johnny's acquaintaince last year through Italy........Positano, Italy.

Johnny perused through my Positano page and left a nice comment for me. As many VT stories go, you meet some of the greatest people on this site. Folks who virtually make your acquaintance, and if you're really lucky, make your acquaintance in the REAL world.

Johnny is a local Bay Area boy. In fact, that was my nickname for him back in the day.......LOCAL BOY. Many conversations via email and on the phone led to a true blessed friendship in the real world. I trusted him enough to send my best girlfriends over to Europe to meet and greet him while they visited with him in Paris and London. All reports coming back very POSITIVE about the Johnny.

If you ever have an opportunity to meet this *gem* of a gentleman/pimpy accountant, consider yourself lucky.

You'll walk away with a positive vibe and a little *Ebonics* in your vocabulary, aight?!

Cafe Del Mar- SF Sunset Party: Starry-Eyed Surprise!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The DJ lineup was the best they had ever had under one roof!

Ellen Ferrato is a "personal favorite" of the Lemon-Drop crew. She knows how to work the crowd when she spins the top House music......and she always serves it up with the most energetic smiles!!

She has her own following........Folks get together at Ellen's place for "warm ups" and cocktails, and they all head down to that night's venue.

She never disappoints when she's behind the DJ booth and she definitely was on fire at the Sunset Party!

This establishment is frequented for its inexpensive (though rather mediocre) pasta, extremely flirtatious waiters, Italian music, and televised soccer. Go for a drink and to soak up the atmosphere instead. It gets very crowded, particularly on warm days. They also have a trattoria a few doors down. Sit outside, people watch, and imbibe (only beer and wine are served; no mixed drinks). Be warned that this is a CASH ONLY place, with street parking. Late at night, the Italian waiters have been known to carry young ladies inside, as well as dance atop the bar!!

    Extremely casual
