SAVOY TIVOLI: Best Place In North Beach To Chill Out

by Krystynn Updated Aug 25, 2006

Savoy Tivoli is reputedly the best bar/ cafe in North Beach and the loooong queue on weekends is a great testament to the bold claim. It's a real cool and fun place with loads of atmosphere (European atmosphere, that is). You can choose to sit outside and breathe in the fresh air (and people-watch) instead of being part of the noisy crowd inside. But if you choose to sit indoors, you can watch TV on their TV sets.

    I love this place!

Savoy Tivoli: A North Beach Bar

Savoy Tivoli is a North Beach bar. Good place for a drink, to hang out, play some pool.

Day or night I love the exterior.

My favorite thing about Tivoli is it sort of exemplifies a certain type of look some buildings in the City have.

I hate the fact that any more you get off a plane in lots of cities and towns in the US and they all mostly seem to have the same unsatisfying plastic "chrome & glass" look and feel:

I would be willing to bet you could blindfold people, take them to North Beach, point them at the Savoy Tivoli, remove the blindfold, and the first thing most of them would say is:

"oh yeah, we must be in San Francicso,"
    and thank God for that.

    Savoy Tivoli: North Beach Hangout

Savoy Tivoli is a popular spot in a popular area in town. Always filled with a younger crowd, Savoy never has a cover, doesn't have live music but always seems to pack 'em in.

One block off the main street of Columbus, Savoy Tivoli has a 'euro-' feel and popular with the local as well as the visiting crowd. Some may find it a bit too busy but if you don't mind a packed house, this is the place to be.

First, it turned into a restaurant/bar, and then into a cafe/bar, and at last into its present incarnation as a bar/bar. And, like a lot of North Beach bars, it still has a bit of old time feel to it. The bar itself is old-fashioned dark wood with beautifully stacked bottles of booze behind it, and the light fixtures are antique--or at least have the look of antiques. There are church-like vaulted archways leading from the front room into the back, and painted clouds on parts of the wall.
