Beaches / Pacific Coast: NATURE
I don't remember know the name of this place. It was a long drive, a long walk, a steep hill. But it was worth every single minute.

Beaches / Pacific Coast: Sunset On Stinson Beach
After our misty, windy, cold trip to Point Reyes, we drove south on Highway 1 to Stinson Beach. Surprisingly we had left the fog and clouds on the point, and were blessed by a magnificent sunset. We were a little late since the park closes at sunset, but we quickly lit the charcoal and wrapped the hot dogs, and fresh corn with aluminum foil. While I was playing 'chef' Sheila took the camera to the beach and captured one of the most beautiful sunsets ever! I'm sure this would have been a nice place to spend more time, but even our brief visit was well worth the drive. Unfortunately Hwy 1 was closed for repair south of Stinson Beach, so we were detoured over Mt Tamalpais, by Muir Woods National Monument, and though Mill Valley to get back to Berkeley. But even that twisting mountain road was an awesome drive with spectacular views of the city lights.

Beaches / Pacific Coast: Drive south to Monterey Bay
Consider driving south along California Highway 1 to Monterey. It has beautiful beaches and breathtaking scenery of the ocean. The beauty of nature is definitely the most enjoyable part of this trip. See my Monterey travel page for more information.

Beaches / Pacific Coast: Fort Funston - for hikers and dog lovers
Fort Funston is another great place in SF to get in touch with the outdoors. This is a rugged stretch of Pacific coastal headlands, sand, and dunes south of Ocean Beach. At the bottom of the cliffs there's a windy beach for good for walking and running dogs, but nor not swimming or sunbathing. This place is especially popular for dog owners. You will always find a lot of them here, and they are OK off-leash. If you are afraid of dogs this probably isn't the best park for you, but realize that the dog owners here are generally regulars and the dogs well behaved. I've never encountered a problem. Fort Funston is one of the best hang-gliding spots in California. If you are into this sport, you already know this. Other visitors can enjoy watching the fun. There is even a wheelchair-accessible viewing deck.

Beaches / Pacific Coast: Hangliders and sunsets
Fort Funston is one of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco whenever I'm in a contemplative mood. It just have that calming effect on me. Perched high up a cliff overlooking the pacific ocean, I have a birds eye view of the many activities around me: big ocean liners slicing through the waters of the pacific on their way or coming out of the bay, dogwalkers trying helplessly to keep up with their tireless canine friends, lovers walking hand in hand and sneaking a few kisses on the beach below, seabirds and sea lions trying to steal a fisherman's catch (i don't know why i find this so funny), birdwatchers watching...uh...birds, :))>, hikers on their daily strolls, and if your lucky, hangliders dancing in the sky. Yes, this is a hangliding mecca, and when the wind and weather is just right, they come to this place in droves. Someday, I will join them, :))>. Go there a couple of hours before sunset to enjoy the aforementioned activities and just to soak in the vibe of the place, then find a good spot to marvel at one of the best sunsets in San Francisco, with the seemingly never ending ocean as the foreground. Do take good care of this place for me though, because it's very fragile. Do not climb over fences and step on the plants, they're there to keep the soil from plunging into the ocean. Stay on the trails. You can get there by taking the Great Highway heading south from Ocean Beach or the Cliff House. Once you past John Muir Drive (Stop Light), you will see a sign on your right, enter that narrow road that leads into a huge parking lot. Enjoy!
