SF Views: Dead End Stairway
On the east side of Grant Ave, near Telegraph Hill (between Pfeiffer and Chestnut), we found a staircase between two houses. All it said was "Dead End." Led to a public deck with an awesome view. This deck is not marked in any manner, and you won't find it unless you either explore or know.

SF Views: Legion of Honor
The Legion of Honor was constructed in 1924 to commemorate the 3,400 California soldiers who died in World War I, and it is a 3/4 replica of Paris' Palais de la Légion d’Honneur. It contains 4,000 years of ancient and European art in a beautiful setting overlooking the city, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay. In the area around the Legion of Honor is a holocaust memorial featuring a man behind a fence in front of a pile of bodies, a big orange scrap iron tinker toy, and a monument commemorating the first Japanese ship to sail to the US. From the fountain in front of the museum you have a great view if the city in the distance. The Legion of Honor is located in Lincoln Park near 34th Avenue and Clement Street. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m.–5:15 p.m, admission is $10.00 for adults. First Tuesday of the month is free!!! A short scene from the 1058 Alfred Hitchcock movie Vertigo was filmed here. Other scenes from the movie include Fort Point, Mission Dolores, and Mission San Juan Bautista. In the film, Scottie says, "I'd been to the Palace of the Legion of Honor, the art gallery." Madeleine responds, "Yes, that's a lovely spot, isn't it? I've never been inside, but it looks so lovely driving past."

The view of the city on twin peaks is definitely breathtaking. We arrived something like an hour before sunset. It is a very nice place to watch the sun set and take some pictures. The lighted street is Market Street and the bridge on the top is the Bay Bridge. Of course if you want to make this kind of pictures a tripod is mandatory. Beware though that it can be quite windy and chilly out there. We had taken our coats with us, but I would have appreciated an additional sweater.

The way down from Bernal Heights is half the fun. The top of the hill itself is pretty bare and tree-less. On the way down, you see a semi-hidden staircase winding straight down into an alcove of trees. You take the stairs and find yourself winding down a foresty staircase toward a residential area. Across the street another hidden staircase leads back down the foresty hill .. and into a -- slide! A metal children's slide built into the hill. Slide down the side of the hill and into a sandbox before descending down the stairs onto another residential street. Suddenly, you're in a quiet, clean, paved East-Coast-esque little neighborhood. Make a couple turns and a couple blocks away you find yourself back in the heart of the mission, 20 minutes and 2 worlds away.

The SF skyline from Treasure Island - San Francisco

    Island

Treasure Island is that left-hand exit you always pass on the Bay Bridge and think to yourself, "someday I'm going to get off at that exit and see what's there." This was that day for me. Luckily my hostess was game, and we stopped to take some very nice photos of the Bay Bridge and SF skyline (and a couple not-so-clear ones of the Golden Gate Bridge). I was just getting the hang of my new digital camera earlier in the week, so please forgive the less-than-stellar quality of the photos. Again, this is a left-hand exit off the Bay Bridge (Hwy 80), so be prepared, especially when traffic on the Bride is heavy. If I remember correctly, there's a fork in the road at the bottom of the exit, and you want to veer right. We took the curved road down to the entrance of the former military base, made a U-turn (rather than go through the entrance) and parked at the vista point where there are a few free spaces. You can't miss them because they are next to a tourist kiosk selling film, postcards and the like. The link is to the official government site for Treasure Island. It gives info on taking MUNI to the Island as well.
