John's Grill: Overrated, over expensive
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • John's Grill or "Historical John's Grill" as it says on the bill is a Seafood/Steak restaurant and is apparently quite famous in SF. It was recommended by the concierge at the hotel and was looking forward to a great steak. On the website you can read: "This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous establishments. It is a favorite with local and national celebrities who enjoy the great steaks, fresh seafood, salads and pastas with excellent services at honest prices. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant's interior is a masterpiece of original period furnishings(...)" The walls are covered with pictures of celebrities that have eaten there (I remember seeing Hillary Clinton's picture). My opinion: - Service could be much faster and more efficient. - The steak was good, but not as good as other I have had for half the price. - It was quite expensive. A medium Porter house steak was 29$. I don't think you get your money's worth, that's all. There was also a quite "industrial" feel to it, the service was very "cold", I remember mentioning to the waitress that the steak was not very good and got an "Oh?" as a reply. When we got the bill, there was a hand-written note on in saying "Service not included. 15% $9.00, 20% $12". Thanks, I always had problems with those horrible percentages... I don't think I will be going back. At these prices, I become MUCH more demanding.

The food has always been spectacular and fresh. The chef makes all the pasta and bread from scratch right there. They have great salads and appetizers as well as meat and seafood dishes. And the best tiramisu around. The service is friendly and fast. It is casual but nice enough for a business dinner or a date. I like that it is not too noisy.

My two favorites are the ravioli di zucca - stuffed with butternut squash in brown butter sage - freshly made and as good as anywhere in Italy. My other fav is the grilled radicchio with goat cheese with balsamic drizzled on it.

We walked around for quite a while before we found this gem of a restaurant. Sure, there were a handful of deli’s offering up hanging crispy ducks and pigs, but this one had just what we were looking for: lots of Chinese locals sitting at simple wooden tables eating with gusto. On entering, it was as if transported to Asia, with their wares hanging proudly in the dining area and people horded at tables side by side obviously enjoying them. We sat ourselves down amongst an otherwise all Asian clientele and ordered from a fairly extensive menu for such a simple looking place. The waitress-owner spoke enough English to quickly get us the steaming food. What else can you ask for?

This place became our staple breakfast stop. The first day, Doreen had rice porridge with roast pork. The huge heaping bowl was a mere $2.55 and full of succulent meat. My duck rice ($3.55) came with lettuce sautéed in oyster sauce, and was not only huge but delicious. On subsequent visits, we tried the pork rice ($3.55) and were equally impressed. You get hot tea for free so this is truly an inexpensive place to start your day!

Great tiny little Italian bistro (only 28 seats) in North Beach. Staff is Italian. Owned by two Italian women from Varese and Bologna. Long lines at lunch. Get there before noon or after 1pm. No reservations. No credit cards accepted. Lunch and dinner.

Delicious antipasto, foccacio sandwiches, pizza, pasta. Save room for tiramisu. Pay no attention to that cop busting the guys in the corner of this picture. We don't. Seriously, North Beach is very safe.

If you didn't know better, you'd probably pass this restaurant by. The paint is peeling off the sign, its side of the street is a bit seedy, there are trendier cafes in the area. The locals and working crowd, however, know this is the best Thai food restaurant in the Financial District.

Pad Thai with various toppings, red, yellow, green curry dishes. Line at lunch. Get here before noon. Sit down, but also has a take out window. Reasonable. Serves lunch and dinner. Easier to be seated at dinner after the working crowd goes home and the Financial District calms down.

Dol Ho: Dim Sum at it's authentic best
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is another Chinatown gem that is full of Asian locals and devoid of any tourist aura. The service is friendly if you are not presupposing they speak English. Just point or nod yes or no to their suggestions and you’ll be happy you came. It’s a simple hole-in-the-wall so don’t expect a fancy dim sum experience, but it’s very inexpensive and the food is excellent and very authentic. A trip to the restroom affords views of a working kitchen as you wander not only through it but into what seems another country all in one go.

We tried an assortment of things, ranging from pork dumplings, vegetable/shrimp dumplings, and many colorful things we couldn’t quite understand the names of but were adventurous enough to nod yes to. We weren’t disappointed by any of them. We tipped two dollars on an eight dollar check and on our next visit, the same waitress gave us two free portions!

The ultimate hole in the wall. No offense to the owners - in my book that is a term of endearment. Worst decor and ambience, best Hunan food ever. And so spicy, you'll be crying. The bars on the windows merely add to the ambience. A sign hanging in the window says "Closed for Renovation" but they are open. Please, please don't renovate! The seediness is part of the charm!

Too many excellent dishes to list. All good. Almost all spicy. Very. Fantastic spicy green beans. Popular with the Chinese community. Located where the Financial District melds into Chinatown. Line at lunch. Open for lunch and dinner.

House of Nanking: Outstanding Szechuan and Hunan Food

This place is so scary looking on the outside, (and inside, too) if you didn't know better, you'd cross the street to the other side. Then you would notice the long line of people lined up in front halfway down the block. First, you would think this is a line to get into one of the numerous live nude places on the same block, but then you would realize, no, people are actually waiting to get into this hole in the wall. Scrumptiously delicious szechuan and hunan food. Lunch and dinner. Frequented by Chinese locals and working crowd.

Don't bother ordering from the menu. At House of Nanking, you simply tell the owner, "I'd like fish (or shrimp, or meat, or chicken, or vegetarian") and he'll whip up something that will make you think you really are in the Jiangsu Province. His dishes vary each time I go there. Sometimes he uses a black bean sauce, sometimes a garlic sauce, sometimes a peanut sauce. All excellent. All cheap.

You'll for sure miss this cafe if cafes next to nail salons are not your thing. But you'll be making a big mistake. Krivaar has the best middle eastern food in the Financial District, possibly all of San Francisco. Tiny, only a few tables. Order at counter, line at lunch but they so very efficiently move people through. Order to go and eat outside.

The best hummus in the State of California. Delicious dolmas, gyros, tabouleh, baba gannoush, popular vegan "Wowee Plate". Awesome baklava.

This burrito place is very popular with the working crowd in the Financial District. Not really a Mexican restaurant, 360 Degrees serves burritos with a flair, using ingredients that aren't typically used in burritos, like artichokes, feta cheese and mushrooms. But if those combinations seem too strange, 360 Degrees also serves more traditional burritors as well.

All fresh ingredients and low fat. Vegetarian and meat. Limited tables, order at the counter, then take your burrito to go. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Closes at 8pm. Closed weekends.
