This might be my new favorite San Francisco restaurant. It certainly is my favorite for when I'm in the mood for Italian. Trattoria Pinocchio's is very Italian. I chose this place for my birthday dinner and we celebrated in high style with many courses and a bottle of prosecco and an Amarone. Very very nice. It is also a nice choice for a less elaborate lunch. Seated by the window provides a view of North Beach traffic and the Church and Washington Square. On nice days, the windows open to let in the outdoors and you feel as if you're dining al fresco.
On our latest visit we had calamari fritti and caprese salad for a starter. Beautifully prepared and served, fresh Italian bread is always provided along with olive oil and balsamic for dipping. We had an excellent tortalini al noci (with walnut sauce) for our main dish and neither of us could finish more than half. The servers speak Italian or hesitant English, which completes the air of feeling like you've stepped into Italy. In the evenings, a nice jazz trio provides background music. ZUNI CAFE has been around for 25 years, a lifetime for most restaurants, but Zuni still showcases the best of San Francisco dining, from Judy Rodgers' lusty cooking to the eclectic clientele who consume it. The interior features agreat bar with windows overlooking Market St., an open kitchen and a wood-fired oven that produces the incomparable chicken and is part of the organic decor. This is a little Pakistani/Indian restaurant that is simply but tastefully decorated. It’s unusual in the sense you order up at the cashier but they bring the food to you. The menu is not very extensive but most typical favorites are here.
We had a very tasty chicken tikka masala ($6.99) that was delicately spiced and lamb saag ($6.99). They came sans rice but at these prices, who can argue. We opted to forgo it and get more naan bread (only $1.00 per order) and were glad we did as it was perfectly done and came piping hot out of the oven. You can also get the food to go and bring it to the Toronado if you want to have a beer with it. Okay, this is a touristy thing to do, but San Francisco is noted (and rightfully so) for its sourdough bread and Boudin’s surely makes a great one. The idea of putting soup, preferably clam chowder into a round scooped our loaf evidently originated here. It’s full of tourists but still a cool place to visit as you watch the bread being transported by a pulley type device. You can eat outside under space heaters, much needed with the city’s infamous foggy cool weather. It’s very convenient and I guess something everyone should do once.
We shared one bowl of the chowder as it was a bit pricey at $6.95. The chowder itself was not bad but not exactly full of clams and the portion was pretty measly other than the bread bowl it came served in. Generally, we noticed people throwing the bowl away rather than eating it when we found it the best part of the meal! By only ordering one, we were able to eat the whole thing and then picked up some fried calamari at one of the nearby seafood stands. The night before leaving San Francisco, we wanted just simple, plain food. I must admit I was just tired of fine dining, as our gustatory tour de force of San Francisco was coming to an end. Taylor's Refresher is located in the Ferry Building, and unlike most businesses there, are open until 9:00 pm every night. The interior is modern and sleek with stainless steel stools, concrete flooring, and white subway tile walls. This is high class fast food, and service is impressively fast for the quality of food they have. There was a huge line-up at supper when we went, but the line moved extremely fast, and there is plenty of seating inside and out, no problems there.
They have all the usual stuff, such as meat loaf, mac and cheese, and shakes, and we decided to go with burgers and shakes. The burgers seem pricey at about $7.00 apeice, but they are very large, with excellent quality meat and egg buns. Don't miss out on the fries tossed in Garlic Butter and Parsley mmmm. They also have one of the best chocolate shakes I have ever tasted, very rich, very chocolatey (my hubby said it was too much chocolate, but you and I know that is impossible!!!) and thiiiiick. You know you've hit a good place to eat when you are already planning to return someday. Taylor's ... watch out ! Max's Opera Cafe sometimes has singing servers. The food has inspired several smaller Max's (the Diner, Max's Eatz, Sweet Max's) to spring up all over the Bay Area. Besides opera, what can one expect at Max's? Chopped chicken liver and onions, or hamburgers and fries, or pastrami on rye. Just about any calorie-packed deli-style temptation imaginable is on the menu. If you don't feel like a hamburger, order a salad or dessert. They are all huge (including macaroons that seem to weigh half a pound) and delicious. Open Hours: 11:30am-10pm Mon; 11:30am-11pm Sun, Tue-Thu; 11:30am-midnight Fri-Sat
Everything is delicious at Max's. I love the grilled reubin sandwich and the Chinese chicken salad with mandarin oranges or the cobb salad. The chocolate chip cookies are like homemade. And all portions are large at this restaurant yet the prices are reasonable. Leave a Comment

One of my favorite places to have lunch is McKormick and Kuletos at Ghiradelli Square. The restaurant is sublimely comfortable, with plush booths, white table cloths, excellent seafood choices, a nice wine list by the glass, and fantastic views. The Bayside wall is all windows and the view of Alcatraz and the Bay is unbeatable. Just below the restaurant is Aquatic Park and it's a rare occasion you won't see someone swimming in the freezing cold waters of the Bay.
Excellent SF sourdough is included with your meal. I have had many things on M & K's menu but I always start my meal with the mixed salad with gorgonzola and walnuts. I also love some of the seafood pasta dishes. The crab cakes are very good. Leave a Comment

Oops. This is a white tablecloth joint. So I lied about no white tablecloth joints in my tips. This was is too good not to recommend. First of all, the ambience is incredible. The restaurant is very small with both indoor and outdoor dining. Sociale is tucked away down a brick pathway between two buildings in upscale Presidio Heights. You'd never know it was there if you weren't specifically looking for it. We made our reservations very late - the day before - and did not get to sit inside. Instead we dined on the outdoor patio, in the middle of December. Here in California, you can do that. Just strategically place some heat lamps throughout the patio, and one could dine comfortably during a typical 40 degree winter evening in SF. Some of the patrons were shown tables outside and whined about it. In my opinion they were wimps to the nth degree. I mean, after all, this is not the Arctic Circle.
Sociale is Tuscan Californian. Being a vegetarian, I started with deep fried olives wrapped in cheese - they were delicious! My main course was simple - a cappelini with tomatoes, basil and garlic, but delicious in its simplicity and understatement. My daughter ordered pumpkin pasta with sauteed prawns and bottarga (tuna roe - yikes! Probably not too ecologically conscious! My husband and I are trying to make sure only the "right" fish is eaten! Sorry, hubby!). She said the dish was excellent. Her friend Holly ordered a rib eye steak with roasted fingerlings and something that on the dark patio looked like a dead bird. I concluded that it couldn't be, not in an upscale restaurant like this. I thought perhaps it was a roasted raddichio or something like that, but no one was willing to taste it to make sure. Keeping with the seasonal dishes, for dessert, I ordered a pumpkin tart with vanilla gelato. It was superb! The wine list had a great collection of California and Italian wines. We will definitely return and may even order that dead bird dish again.
