Bucca Di Beppo: Southern Italian Cuisine (2)

by machomikemd Written Nov 28, 2013

part two of my bucca di beppo tips with more pictures

this is my favorite italian restaurant if you want to super size your eating pleasures vie their "Buca Size" meals for the family. This Classic southern italian family style joint is one of the popular dining venues at the universal City Walk for their huge family meals to share and reasonable prices. The name roughly translates as "Joe's Basement" (buca, which literally means "hole," can be a slang word for basement or cellar, and Beppo is a nickname for Giuseppe, the Italian form of "Joseph", in Southern Italy). The food at Buca di Beppo is served family style, each item served à la carte and shared among the dining party, the chain is owned by Planet Hollywood group. Each room at Buca is themed, and all restaurants have a Pope table -- the largest single table, round, in a room by itself, with a bust of the Pope as centerpiece -- and kitchen table -- a table, usually inset to the wall, directly across from the main kitchen, at which the waiter and chefs will converse with you and allow you to sample many dishes. This location is located at the South of Market along Busy Howard Street, In Front of the Inter-Continental Hotel.

    Hours:

Monday to Sundays: 11:30 am to 11:00 pm

Favorite Dish: the Buca Size Meals! each bucca di beppo restaurant has many selections in it's varied menu from the single serve sizes to the "buca size" meals and these are classic italian italian american fare like peperroni pizza, fried calamari, chianti braised short ribs, penne arrabiata and more. prices vary if the meals are ordered single srve, small buca size (good for 2) or large buca size (good for 4 or more). they also have their in house wine plus an extensive selections of other wines.

Bucca di Beppo: Avoid the grief of Bucca di Beppo

Here's the problem I have had with Buca di Beppo on Howard st. They are rude; you'd think a restaurant that deals with groups would know how to handle groups? Well, this place doesn't and because of the horrible treatment my friends and I got from BDP I swore I would never go there again!
I was given gift certificates from my employer for Chritmas and wanted to take my friends out for dinner. We were told by the host we would have to wait for a table for about 60 minutes one friday evening, which we were ok with. We were told to wait at the bar, no body in the group wanted a drink and there is no other place to wait except out on the street. I said we will walk to the Metreon just a block away, asked the host to call us if the table was going to be ready earlier and we'd be back in 5 minutes. He was not willing to go the extra mile and make a call. We come back 45 minutes later only to find out our table was available 30minutes after we left. Ok, fine, now at this point the Maitre'd should have put us on the top of the waiting list right? He put us at the bottom and said there would be a 90 minute wait. I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn't listen. We left BDP and took our money to another restaurant that knew how to treat a customer and I traded my gift certs in for another company and used them else where too.

Hopefully things have changed at BDP but why take that chance when you have many other great choices to choose from in San Francisco?

Favorite Dish: It's certainly not the Host!

Buca di Beppo: Family Style Italian

I usually don't like or recommend chain restaurants, but Buca di Beppo is worth an honorable mention. You get so much food - a lot of "stick to your ribs" type of dishes and hearty pastas. Food is served family style - it comes on big platters and everyone digs in.

Favorite Dish: If you are feeling religious, reserve the Pope's Table and stare at a bust of the Pope while you dine.

A very fun place for a group!
