Ghirardelli Square: Skip the Ice Cream - Go Straight for the Chocolate
I thought this place would be a little more charming, but it was just a crowded, noisy ice cream parlor. Don't be fooled by the menu - flip it over to see more choices than the $6.50 sundaes.
You do get a free piece of chocolate when you enter the store area, which is either to the right of the ice cream parlor entrance or a separate shop upstairs if you're already in the parlor. There is, at least, some chocolate-making equipment at the back of the parlor for historical interest.
Favorite Dish: We got the Foghorn - chocolate ice cream with raspberry and (supposedly) hot fudge. The ice cream was only so-so - as you can see from our picture, we had high expectations. We also couldn't find our hot fudge anywhere in the sundae.
Ghirardelli Square: A Chocoholic's Heaven!
First, you have to have at least a chocolate sundae in the chocolate shop. For those brave few "The Earthquake" is exactly what it sounds like. Awesome for about four people or two if you're really brave.
If you love chocolate this is the place to be. A little tip: Get a hot chocolate and a chocolate square of your choice, I like the milk chocolate for this and let it melt in your hot chocolate, then drink. Or, for the risk takers, a white hot chocolate is incredible enough but if you want a little zip to it, add some rum. You can buy the small mini bottles across the street on Northpoint at Michealis Market.
Also, There is much more to Ghirardelli Square than just the chocolate. There are unique shops, restaurants and wine tasting at Wattle Creek wineries.
Check it out, you won't be sorry.
Ghirardelli: Chocolate IS better than sex!
This is a quaint little restaurant where you can watch the workers making chocolate, while you wait for your sundae to be served.
They also sell chocolate, which I didn't taste but I trust it's as good as the sundaes.
Favorite Dish: The best sunday I've ever had in my life was Ghirardelli's cookie dough sundae. Warm cookie dough, with hot fudge, with vanilla ice cream, with whipped cream and a cherry on the top!
Ghirardelli: Mmmm Chocolate!!!
As a chocolate junky, I cannot recommend stopping by Ghirardelli for a dessert (or chocolate sunday dinner if you are so inclined - I know my arm could be so twisted). I ordered one of the more delicious hot fudge sundaes of my life and watched the chocolate assembly line (chocolate being made) while my sundae was being prepared. Delicious.

Ghirardelli Square: Ghirardelli Square
Cold weather and hot chocolate really go together and where to get the best hot choco to warm up from the year-long chilly air of San Francisco? Where else but at Ghirardelli Square. But then again, a friend insists that an ice cream is the best way to fight off the chill... then order from Ghirardelli's great selection of special ice cream and sundaes!
Favorite Dish: Hot Chocolate, Sundaes and chocolate bars!
Ghirardelli Square: San Francisco's most famous Ice Cream
This is the place to go to pick up some of San Francisco's Ghirardelli chocolate and enjoy
heaping spoonfuls of San Francisco ice cream dishes.
Often packed with tourists, give yourself some time as you might have to stand in line for a few minutes.
Favorite Dish: I recommend the banana split or a hot fudge sundae. There's a large selection to choose from.
