we had wanted to eat at B Star but it was closed for Monday, Burmese Superstar had a wait of 1 1/2 hours so decided to eat at the nearest vietnamese restaurant, which happened to Mai across the street from Burma Superstar in Clement Street.
just ordinary decor, ordinary vietnamese food, horrible wine
Favorite Dish: Bung ga xao

The atmosphere is comfortable and rather funky -- not formal. Prices are moderate, servings are generous, and service is generally prompt, even at busy times (although it can get VERY busy, especially for weekend dinners).
Favorite Dish: The cold spring rolls (either vegetarian or meat versions) are superb -- they always taste fresh, and the vegetables are nicely crunchy. I'm particularly fond of the Lemon Grass Chicken, in a simple sauce with herbs and sauteed onions, but if you're not used to hot peppers you might ask them to tone it down for you. (I've lived in New Mexico for 15 years, so my tolerance for chili is rather high!) The sweet-and-sour dishes are excellent: they use a lighter sauce than the usual gummy pink stuff beloved of Chinese restaurants, so the flavors of the ingredients come through nicely.

Mai's Authentic Vietnamese Restaurant
Mai's is a restaurant in the neighborhood I live in that is absolutely fantastic. Consistent in every way, friendly staff, and very reasonable in price. The soups at this place are outta' this wold...overall, the Vietnamese don't mess about when it comes to soups. The neighborhood is Asian, Russian and Irish. You'll be able to find great Asian food (Chinese / Japanese / Burmese / Vietnamese / Korean etc), enjoy a good pint of Guinness at one of the Irish pubs, or stock up at one of the Russian delis or bakeries. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by Green Apple Books and Music btw. 6th & 7th on Clement.
