    Not only do they buy sell and trade CD, tapes, vinyl etc.. they also give their stage to local and out of town musicians to play their stuff. When I pick an artist who I want to support, usually from a download, I particularly like buying the CD here. A truly independent record store. Other locations in Berkeley and Hollywood.     On our single rainy day, the three big guys (little Eli did not come with us!) went on a shopping expedition to the Haight-Ashbury District. We were looking for some specific CDs but just generally enjoyed wandering along the streets of this very laid-back and different looking part of SF. It was a bit of a chore to find some free parking, but we were not in any particular hurry so this was no problem.

    Amoeba's has an amazing selection of music - all of the different categories, jacket covers, vinyl discs and used CDs to boot! We all came away happy with our purchases.

    If you're a music junkie check out Amoeba in the Haight. There's also one in Berkeley. This store is huge and you need a full month to go through all the music they have. They have a large collection of new and used vinyls, and cds. They also have a large used DVD section.

  • What makes it so special? Well geez. Maybe it is the 100,000+ CDs they have stocked. Maybe it is the movies for under $10. And the CDs for $7 (marked down because gosh...the case is scratched! :-P). Amoeba was described by Rolling Stone Magazine as possibly the greatest record store in the world. It is certainly one of the largest, if not the best. You can find so many interesting things here, that very easily you might find yourself spending a huge portion of your day's time browsing through the thousands upon thousands of titles. Beware! If you are a music lover, and you have a hard time controlling yourself, just don't go in! Without any trouble at all, you might suddenly find it absolutely necessary to buy 50 CDs that you just have to have.

    less than in the chain stores (per item)...but overall way more than the chain stores because they will have so many interesting things that you WILL want

    A funky looking shop in a funky part of town. Inside you will find any type of music from all over. It seems as though if you dont find what you're looking for here you wont find it anywhere. There's a new, used, sale and $1 sections giving it a very special place in any backpackers heart. If only I had more room in my pack.....

    This is the ultimate music store here. Cds, records, dvds it's all here. I'm pretty sure they have shirts, posters etc as well.

    New section is average cd prices, used depends on the condition. But then the section I loved most, sale and $1 cds!! Obviously the $1 section everything is $1 and the sale ranges from $9.99 to $1.

    I'm sure this is on everyone's San Francisco tips, but it is all it's cracked up to be. I was surprised that it wasn't as big as the one in L.A., but it used to be a bowling alley so it is definitely a big store.

    Records, CD's, movies, posters, t-shirts!

    $6-$8 on used CD's $10-$17 on new (each)

    If you love music you owe it to yourself to set aside some time to visit Amoeba Music on Haight Street. A bowling alley turned record store, this place has something for every music taste. A huge selection of Experimental, Electronic, Rock, Reggae, World, Jazz Classical and more. I could easily kill 3 hours here. I've almost always been able to find what I was looking for.

    CD, tapes, records, videos. This place has one of the biggest and best selections of everything from rock and jazz to experimental and electronic to world and classical.
