    Department Stores: Ross

by pamychan Updated Dec 3, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

oh man this is heaven!!!!!!! perhaps this may seem crazy to those of you who have the privallege of staying in a place with such stores. i think Ross is quite common in US rite? i know there's a branch in LA. but for those who dont know abt it, Ross is a whole departmental store full of quality clothes, shoes, bags,..... at like prices ard 70% less than normal retail prices! obviously u wont find the latest fashion here but there are huge surprises!!! especially for plus-sized ppl like me staying in places like singapore where most of the women look anorexic, Ross is heaven on earth!!!

What to buy: shoes, bags, clothes(mens, womens and kids), household decorations....... basically anything i think except groceries.

What to pay: well depends on how much money u have! i think i must have spent like 500usd in the san fran store! i had to buy an extra luggage back for my shopping!

Macy's is one of my favorite deparment stores with lcoations throughout many major cities in the US. The best time to visit Macy's in my opinion is during their sales which they have various times during the year.

I love all their departments but some of my favorite have to be their home and house department with huge selection of comforters, sheets, and towels. The children's department is also a favorite and I've been shopping here for over 25 years and it is where I always bought Kristara her baby clothing!

The cosmetics and perfume department are amazing as well with all the major lines sold here. The handbag department is a great place to snag a designer bag as well.

But, my all time favorite department has to be the shoe department. With a huge selection of designer shoes, boots, sandals, and casual foot wear, it is where I do alot of my shoe shopping. During their sales you can snag yourself an amazing pair of shoes at a fraction of the cost, like I did during my recent visit to San Francisco!!

Make sure to stop by the customer relation department and pick up your discount card good for all your purchases during a set time. The discount is 11% and is not limited to foreingers.

What to buy: Everything, its a department store. But I love buying their comforters, sheets and towels, cosmetics and perfume, handbags and of course shoes!!

I recently purchased a HOT pair of Sergio Rossi shoes and I can't wait to wear them!!

What to pay: Inexpensive to expensive, depending on your purchase

Macy's Union Square: Discount At Macy's

by TravelSimone Written Jul 27, 2005

If you are an out-of -own guest and intend to shop at Macy's, you will be eligible for a discount.

Go up to the visitor center (I think this is on the 7th floor). There, they provide light refreshments, and when you show them your out-of -town identification, they will give you a discount card that entitles you to receive 10 or 11%

What to buy: The Macy's at Union Square is fantastic. They carry everything from clothing to homewares to cosmetics. Their merchandise ranges from the mid-priced brands to high-end designers.

There is a separate store (located across the street from each other) for women and men. The women’s store is located on Geary right on Union Square. The Men's store is across the street from the side entrance to the women's store on Stockton.

If you are an out-of -own guest and intend to shop at Macy's, you will be eligible for a discount. The rule is that you are an out-of-town guest staying in a hotel, but I have not known them to check for hotel verification- they only ask for identification.

Look out for the BLUE LIGHT SPECIALS

Where else can one find, Martha Stewart (pre-indictment) Everyday brand housewares, Joe Boxer underwear, Kathy Ireland swimwear, and buy popcorn, peanuts, apple jacks and candy kisses all under one roof?

K-MART of course! K-mart has been around since I was a little tyke hiding in the car so my friends won't see me shop there! Now that store is a GODSEND for Q-Tips, Dishwashing liquid.........everything you need for your home!

There are very few K-mart storechains left around the Bay Area. Most have been replaced by mega-TARGET stores and the Wal-Mart empire.

K-mart will always be a symbol of my youth. When I used kick and scream when my mother would drag me there as a kid!

What to buy: Q-tips, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper......EVERYTHING your household needs!

What to pay: Cheaper than Target

Department Stores: The massive chains along Union Square

    San Francisco

Union Square contains a large collection of large department stores and smaller boutique shops. The area is similar to 5th Avenue in New York and the Magnificent Mile in Chicago with the exception that its not quite so organized.

Here you will find a six or seven story Macy's, Neiman Marcus and other large retail establishments. There is a smaller section of boutiques known as Maiden Lane.

Again, like it's mother company Macy's which owns Macy's West (the flagship store in the west coast), this Bloomingdales is the Flagship Store in the West Coast Area and is fairly recent here since it just opened in 2006 and it is claimed that this is the second largest store of Bloomingdales and consists of a massive 338,550-square-foot department store that is the anchor of the Westfield San Francisco Centre at Fifth and Market streets.

    Hours: Mon-Sat 9:30am-9pm, Sun 10am-7pm

What to buy: how about Jimmy Choo Shoes! or My Favorite Louis Vuitton Belts! You Can also try Prada or Esacada or Versace. the list is endless but the credit card limit is not!

Nordstrom's: Nordstrom's Dept. Store and lounge at Westfield!

    Me going to Nordstrom
    4 more images

Nordstrom offers a wide variety of quality apparel, shoes and accessories for men, women, and children since it was originally a shoe retailer and like costco, Nordstrom got started in the seattle area. Known for personal service, Nordstrom has gained a reputation for being among the premier department stores in the United States. Again, Nordstrom company originated in Seattle (opening its first store in 1901 and was founded by John W. Nordstrom, a Swedish immigrant, and Carl Wallin, the owner of a Seattle shoe repair shop), and its customers are devotedly loyal since Nordstrom is well known for its customer service!

What to buy: Prices may be a bit higher than those at other department stores nearby like Macy's or Bloomingdales, but for your money you get the best service available. The store is packed with shoppers during the half-yearly sale in June and the anniversary sale in July and Nordstoms specializes in clothing, accessories, handbags, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances, and in some locations, home furnishings.

What to pay: Opens: Mon-Sa 9:30am-9pm, Sun 10am-7pm

  • Macy's San Francisco: Visit it :)

    by Ivo_K Updated Mar 1, 2011

This huge department store situated in the very centre of SF offers 8 floors for shopping. I'm sure you'll find exactly what you want in there! Not only does it have clothes, accessories, shoes, jewelry and watches, perfumes and cosmetics, home stuff etc....but it also has the Burger Bar and the Cheesecake Factory (The Cheesecake Factory on the roof is a definite bonus!). I have heard that it has the largest shoe department on the West Coast. Macy's open from 10 am - 9 pm (Monday-Saturday) and 11 am - 7 pm on Sundays. Parking is difficult though and you should expect to pay at least $5 for parking. The staff is not very friendly and helpful, but with this choice of goods you can live with it... You can get a Macy's card and save an additional 15% or as a tourist you could get a 10% discount coupon from your hotel and in this way at least to compensate the annoying tax.

What to pay: Depends on how much you have in your pocket/credit card :)

NEIMAN MARCUS: For An Exceptional Shopping Experience

by Krystynn Written Aug 25, 2006
    Neiman Marcus

Neiman Marcus - for the absolutely clueless out there - is an upscale department store located in a beautiful vintage building selling everything you would expect of a department store. My favorite sections in Neiman Marcus are definitely the skincare/perfume, women's clothing, men's clothing and footwear sections. The service here is first class but I must admit, the sales staff here can be quite snooty. But so far, they have been very patient with me even when I took a while (and tried on more than a dozen pair of shoes) before deciding to buy a pair.

Do drop by The Rotunda Restaurant and the Fresh Market Café - when you feel you need a break from your shopping expedition!

What to buy: They have most designer stuffs here from Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, Salvatore Ferragamo (my favorite Italian footwear), Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Gucci, Christian Dior, Donna Karan et al.

What to pay: Most of the things sold here are what we would term as - upmarket. However, it is really much cheaper to shop for American brand products in Neiman Marcus than say, in Europe or Asia. Clinique and Prescriptives skincare products are at least 50% cheaper here vs buying them in Asia! This was where I replenished all my Clinique skincare products that will last me for at least one year ;-)

    Macy's at night.

This large department store has everything you need. Check their San Francisco souvenir section for a nice selection of souvenirs...better than Fisherman's Wharf shops.
