Boating / Sailing: Sail away!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sailing is a huge sport in San Francisco. We have all kinds of races and regattas. It's February now, too early for sailing season, so most of the boats are moored in the marina, awaiting the start of the season.

San Francisco is not only a great city to walk around but also features many nice hiking trails close to town. There are good short walks at both Corona Heights and Buena Vista Parks that gain elevation quickly and afford good views of the city and bay. The Coastal Trail runs 1200 miles of the California coast and some of the more spectacular parts are right around San Francisco. We picked it up in the Richmond area of the city, a half hour bus ride from the city center.

You’ll need good comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing as the weather changes quickly in S.F. If you’re heading for longer walks, bring rain gear too.

SBC Park / SF Giants: Go Giants!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are here during baseball season, you must go to a Giants Game at AT&T Park, (formerly SBC Park and before that, PacBell Park. The name changes so often, we just now call it "The "Ballpark"). Doesn't matter if you are not a Giants fan or even a baseball fan. Simply going to The Ballpark is an experience.

Rather than buying a ticket, some people prefer to sail their boat McCovey Cove, in the foreground of this picture and watch the game on TV on their boat. Why? Because this is the most likely place Barry Bonds, a lefty, will hit a homerun. This Cove is just beyond right outfield.

This odd looking building was one of San Francisco's authentic original movie houses. Instead of being torn down when the large movie theatre chains grabbed all the business, this one was renovated and recently reopened as Gorilla Sports, a fitness club.

This club features sessions like Kwando and kick-boxing.

SBC Park / SF Giants: SBC Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • SBC Park, home of the Giants, from the outfield. This might be the most beautiful stadium in the USA, and it's right on the water too. Baseball season is from April through September, but you can get into the stadium any time of the year. Either pay for a tour, or get into the outfield bleachers for free, as I did. And, bring the kids too-they have a couple of baseball themed playgrounds-including in the big Coke bottle. Any time of the year, SBC Park is brilliant. Nice job, Giants!!!

SBC Park / SF Giants: SBC Park, from the Outside
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pic of SBC Park is taken from a pier, outside the stadium. This is a jewel of a ballpark. TV can't do justice to the setting either. Bring your boat to the game!!!

Candlestick Park / SF 49'ers: Now's the time to see the 'Niners
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not available at the ballpark - San Francisco
    Not available at the ballpark

The 'Niners are a big part of SF life, and a source of immense pride not only to the city itself, but to all of Norhern California. Watching games in bars is not such a big activity - as most games start at 1 PM at the latest (10 AM if they're playing on the east coast). The best way to see them is live of course, and the parking lot tailgaters are legendary - starting very early in the morning. Virtually all the seats at the 'Stick are held by season ticket holders, and the few that are available are snapped up early in the season. In past years tickets were virtually impossible to get. However, most of these ticket holders offload the not-so-big game tickets on the internet. Craig's List is great for this. Another avenue is to ask at your local bar; bar owners often get season tickets and keep the good games and sell the others to their patrons. And then there are always the scalpers. The 'Niners have won 5 Super Bowls over the years, but these days the team is but a shell of its former greatness. But our loss is your gain... tickets should be plentiful. Games against the hated Raiders or the universally despised Dallas Cowboys are always hard to get, but this once untouchable experience is now within your reach! PS... don't beleve the hype about how awful Candlestick is. While it was a pretty bad place to watch baseball, its actually a great place to watch a football game! PPS... Candlestick Park is located in one of the worst neighborhoods in the City. Stick to the main freeway exits and don't try to take shortcuts.

    Bike the Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Crossing the bridge does not necessarily include seeing the bridge... I felt kind of betrayed during the bike trip - because there was no bridge! But still, it was a great day!! Blazing Saddles is one of the companies renting bikes in SF, on various locations throughout the city. One is directly at Fisherman's Wharf. Bikes are great, you get a helmet, a lock, a little bag and a map. They show you exactly which way to go to cross The Bridge and explain various routes of different length. You even get a ferry ticket which you can return if you decide to cycle back over the bridge. They also take a picture of you before departure which you can buy upon return (nice pictures, but at 10 USD too expensive). You don't get any emergency kit for flat tyres etc, but they have a phone helpline. Which doesn't help much if you're cycling in the middle of nowhere.

Our tour was crossing the bridge in complete fog, then going down to sunny Sausalito, having lunch there and then cycle on to sunny Tiburon (whole trip about 25 km). There my tyre gave up but fortunately just a few meters away from the ferry. The ferry was very busy, full of cyclists, but a comfortable to get some rest. The maps are not perfect... it helps to watch out for people with the same bike/ same bag/ same map - it's a good sign you're on the right way. www.blazingsaddles.com

And you were expecting something about the Giants or 49ers? I will eventually write something on Giants. it is a great ballpark they play in. However, you will never read anything on the forty-whiners. I HATE them. 'nuff said. (49ers are SF American Football team) The fastest growing sport in the States is NASCAR. With nothing but fast cars, hot girlies and beer drink’n, I don’t quiet get it. What makes Infineon Raceway, (formerly Sears Point) different than most the others, is the track has about as many straits as the Castro – not many. I heard that some of the teams change drivers because they can’t race on tracks that make right hand turns.

Spectator Sports: NASCAR - America's Fastest Growing Sport
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am not a fan or anything, other than I like cars and women. I don’t think I can watch a sport on the teli that showed the cars always going round and round, only making lefts. I can watch all the crashes on ESPN’s Spotscenter later on that night. But if I get FREE tickets, I’m there baby!!! I was disappointed there were not as many mullets as there was. However, amazed on the little city that sprouted up around this multi-day event and the ingenious methods of people carrying their vast quantities of personal beer. People make hitches and trailers to their ATV’s to carry their beer with them. Mullets or not, near a city like San Francisco or not, still rednecks.

T-shirt says, “Keester Bait” A keester is a redneck way of saying your “toosh,” “be-hind,” or “fanny” T-shirt shows, “a fish hanging out of a a$$”
