SBC Park / SF Giants: Giants Game at SBC Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Catch a baseball game at the lovely new SBC Park. If they don't win its a shame! Garlic Fries! Take public transportation because parking is limited and expensive.

The 2 most popular professional sport teams are the San Francisco 49ers (American football) and San Francisco Giants. Both teams are quite good as of this writing. In 2002, the Giants made the World Series. Most football seasons see the 49ers in the playoffs. The 49ers have won 5 Super Bowls (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995).

If you go to the baseball game, take along a sturdy glove to catch errant balls that make the stands.

Candlestick Park / SF 49'ers: The Niners
  • Tip Rating:
  • While the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers have fallen off a bit (okay, they suck right now!), that doesn't take away the fact that they were the most dominant team in football throughout the '80s and '90s. They have won a total of five Super Bowl titles and play at 3Com Park.

Candlestick Park / SF 49'ers: Monster Park? 3Com Park? Candlestick Park!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Originally built for the San Francisco Giants (who moved to Pac Bell or SBC Park) in 2000, Monster Park has been the home of the 49ers since 1971. Although Candlestick Park was built for the Giants, the Beatles played their last concert ever there on August 29, 1966, and the NFL’s 49ers have won so many Super Bowls since they moved there in 1971 that the sign in the parking lot said, "Home of the Super Bowl Champions," with almost no mention of the primary tenants.

Six World Series games have been played at Candlestick Park, but the most memorable October event there was the World Series game that wasn’t played. That was on October 17, 1989, when an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale preempted what was to have been Game 3 of the 1989 Bay Bridge World Series against the Oakland A’s. As houses crumbled, highways buckled and bridges collapsed, Candlestick Park stood strong - with 62,000 people packed inside it, none of whom were injured.

None unless your a fanatic fan then bring your banners, props, (Baseball Bat?)!

Water Sports: Chill out (really chill)
Right in front of the Maritime Museum on Beach Street, just west of Ghiradelli Square, you'll find a nice stretch of beach and some marked swimming lanes just off shore. I couldn't believe there were actually people swimming here without wetsuits. That water is COLD!

Oh . . . and you might be swimming with a sea lion, so don't freak out if a giant sea mammal nuzzles up to you while you're out there.

Participation: Cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge
I never got around doing that, but I imagine it would be a lot of fun to rent a bike and cycle across the bridge. Warm clothing necessary, as it gets very windy there!

    Participation: Butt throbbing biking
While I was in San Fran, my friend that lives there says to me, "hey lets bike ride from here to the Golden Gate Bridge" and then I said " Sure, that seems like fun!". Don't get me wrong, it is fun! But from the bay bridge to the Golden Gate is really far, don't trust your eyes! I am only good to give advice to Midwestern people. We have zero hills, so we can't handle an everyday bike ride in San Fran. It was a really beautiful experience. While biking you will always feel like you are going up hill and against the wind there. That is just how it is. Sure it is depressing when old people are riding their bikes past you and even people jog faster than you are riding. But don't be discouraged, after 8 hrs. you will finally get there. Besides being the hardest thing i have ever done physically, being on a bike that long really makes your ass hurt. I admit that there were times that I wanted to give up and just die on the side of the street, but it really helps when you have a strong friend to pull you through and remind you about what an amazing opportunity it is to actually get to ride a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge!

when renting a bike, make sure you get a butt pad. I am not kidding, you will thank me later!
