49 Mile Drive!
In 1938, The San Francisco Downtown Association created the 49 Mile Scenic Drive to highlight the city's beauty and to promote it as a business and tourist destination, so the route began at City Hall, curved along the northern shoreline of the bay and down the Pacific coastline, swooped around Lake Merced, dipped into Golden Gate Park, climbed to the top of Twin Peaks, cruised down Market Street, crossed the Bay Bridge, and ended on Treasure Island. It was created as an entertaining urban diversion for tourists attending the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-40, a fair that opened the following year on Treasure Island and since then the drive remained and became popular until today.
Originally, the drive was measured at 50 miles, but it was quickly reduced to 49, to produce a more meaningful number in a city of some 49 square miles that owes its early prominence to the California Gold Rush of 1849. The only problemm is that it always have missing signs since lots of kleptomaniacs often steal the signs so many get lost (even me) when cruising the 49 mile drive.

Try to see a football game....
Try to see a football game. The 49ers play at 3com park.
Famous team, famous stadium and brilliant atmosphere inside and out. Sadly the day I visited the 49ers were totally outclassed by the Rams, who did win superbowl that season so not really surprising. Most people are frindly and happy to explain the intracacies of the game to novices like me.
