The South of Market area was not a good part of the city in the 1980's but since the 1990's, it underwent Gentrification and one of the major accomplishments of the Gentrification that started in the 1990's was the Zeum Children's Museum, which was made in 1998 and is situated just beside the Moscone Center South and connected to the Yerba Buena Gardens and Metreon via a Sky Bridge. San Francisco's Children's Museum is well-known for its technology-based exhibits which allow youth to produce their own media through various interactive, creative processes: animation, digital art, live performance, and music production. If you are attending a convention at Moscone, you can leave the wife and the kids at the nearby Zeum.

Jumping Twins at Zeum Museum, San Francisco

We brought our kids to downtown San Francisco and found the Zeum Museum which is San Francisco's amazing hands-on, multimedia arts and technology museum for kids! The twins were more interested though in the slides and fun area for kids just outside the museum, and of course the Zeum carousel which I have included in another tip.
The Zeum believes in the a worls with the 3Cs of 21st-century literacy - Creativity, Collaboration and Communication – hoping that tthese will inspire new ideas and innovative solutions. It’s a great place for young developing minds and what we need to continue America’s tradition of innovation.

Ride the historic Zeum Carousel in SFO!

    Zeum Carousel, San Francisco Downtown

Of course, the jumping twins love riding carousels like all kids…But there in one historic carousel that they rode on in San Francisco. This is call the Zeum Carousel which is over a hundred years old!!!
It was actually constructed in Rhode Island in 1906 but could not be put in SFO due to the earthquake and fire – so it was put in Luna Park, Seattle in 1907. But that park had a fire and only this CAROUSEL SURVIVED!!!
So, in 1913, the carousel was moved to San Francisco at the amusement park called Playland-at-the-Beach. It still had its unique features = a whole menagerie of elaborately hand-carved animals, including horses, giraffes, camels and so forth!

But the Playland-at-the-Beach closed in 1972 and a private collector put it into storage in New Mexico. It was moved in 1983 to Shoreline Village in Long Beach and then the City of SFO got it back in 1998, fully restored and now at Yerba Gardens! This carousel is even available for private events!

The Zeum Carousel is located in Yerba Buena Gardens, on the corner of Fourth and Howard Streets in downtown San Francisco.
