Is Fisherman's Wharf a tourist trap? Yes. Does that mean you shouldn't set forth near it? No. Just approach it with the right attitude and mindset. There are plenty of good things about the Wharf. You need to go there to board a boat to Alcatraz. The Municipal Pier offers a great way to get out into the water and view some of the city or the GG Bridge (if it's a clear day). There are some grassy areas near Acquatic Park that you can lounge in. I enjoy strolling around in the area... watching tourist meet the "Bushman"... grabbing a beer from Steelhead Brewery (never the food mind you, but their beer isn't bad) or from one of the 110 beers on tap at Jacks in the Cannery... relaxing and watching people. It's a great people watching area. Avoid it if you can't stand crowds (there will be crowds of crowds). Don't eat at the restaurants (some may be passable but there are better cheaper places elsewhere). Don't buy necessities (water, film, etc... can be very expensive). Leave a Comment

@ Fisherman's Wharf by Tami_G Fisherman's Wharf is a very touristy area. It's very nice. There are many seafood restaurants, lots of shops, museums, sea lions, and all the ferries depart from there. Leave a Comment

Famous Fisherman's Wharf Sign by Easty Fisherman's Wharf is the big tourist area of San Francisco. The Wharf area is primarily focused on the fishing and tourist industries. It kind of reminds me of a large boardwalk area (My eastern thought process again). There are many shops, restaurants, and hotels here. It is also the place to go for boat cruises out on San Francisco Bay. On a summer weekend day, the amount of people walking on the streets reminds me of Midtown Manhattan. Leave a Comment

Stephen Playing Pirate by Stephen-KarenConn If you go anywhere near Fisherman's Warf, don't miss the opportunity to see the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. There is a very fine museum and library which chronicles America's maritime past with numerous artifacts, ship models, etc. To us the most interesting part of the Park was the historic vessels at the Hyde Park Pier. You will be able to board and explore many turn-of-the-century ships of every size and shape imaginable. This will be fun as well as educational for folks of all ages. From a Cable car toward Fisherman's Wharf in 1966 by grandmaR This is the way the street looked in 1966. The neighborhood website says that it is the number one attraction in San Francisco: "All San Franciscans love to hate Fisherman's Wharf. Content never to visit the area, they complain of the tacky shops selling cheap souvenirs, the "novelty" museums whose novelty has long worn off and busloads of tourists blocking the view to Alcatraz. "But secretly, everyone likes it a little, and having guests from out of town is the perfect excuse for otherwise cynical old-timers to "force" themselves to go. And it is possible to have a cheap, good time. Just avoid the wax museums and the ..[tacky souvenier] stands, and what's left are some of the best views in the city.. "..this favorite spot, as they see it today, is only 30 years old. Most of the major attractions -- the Cannery, Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39 -- were built in the late 1960s. " I think this is wrong - Ghirardelli Square was there when we were there - I've got a photo of it from the water. Of course it may look different now than it did then. I don't actually remember too much about Fisherman's Wharf. I remember much more about the cable cars themselves and the jumping on and off of them while they were moving. Leave a Comment

Fisherman's Wharf by PetraG Nice to walk along the streets full of little shops, bars and cafes. You absolutely have to try a crab-sandwich! Tip: Visit the Wax-museum nearby. It's fantastic! Leave a Comment

The Famous Fishermans Wharf sign by keith750cc You can get to Fishermans Wharf easily, its not that far to walk from the city centre, but the best way is the world Famous San Francisco Cable cars. Because its right on the bay front, it can get cold with the sea breeze, so you may need a jumper. The wharf is famous for its sea food and it doesnt fail. We had Clam chowder in a sour dough bun ( the centre is scooped out and filled with the chowder) from Boudins bakery, you can see the bread being made and sit in or out and eat the delicious food. There were street performers dancing all over the place to keep you smiling, there are plenty of shops as you would expect, you can board the USS Pampanito submarine and have a guided tour ( not free). There is an aquarium which you can walk through plexi glass tunnels inches from huge sharks and Rays and 100's more types I couldnt tell you what they were called. You can have a great Irish coffee at the Buena Vista. I didnt stay around there at night, so I couldnt tell you what the nightlife was like. Phone: (415) 626-7070Directions: Right on the bay front, just off Embarkadero, 200yds from the drop off from the Cable car.Website: http://www.fishermanswharf.org/

by ForeverGypsy You would have heard, the real attraction of these wharfs are their famous Sea Lions. These mammals spend the better part of the year (around 10 months) sunning themselves on the docks before heading south to the Channel Islands to breed. These bunch are a noisy lot and are very well aware of all the attention they get. If you are lucky, a few of the younger males may just decide to show off their wrestling skills while all the rest of the Sea Lions egg them on with claps and loud barks. A real fun lot these, i could have watched them allllll day :-) Leave a Comment
