Birds of Paradise, Golden Gate Park by emilienoelle Golden Gate Park is as huge as it is beautiful. Once you are inside, you forget all about the fact that you are in a major US city. It contains many smaller parks within its limits, such as the Japanese Tea Garden and some beautiful botanical gardens. You owe it your self to spend at least a couple of hours here. Leave a Comment

Golden Gate Park by Goner Golden Gate Park is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and has over one million trees, nine lakes, several fly casting pools and a lily pond. It covers 1,013 acres and about three miles long and a half mile wide. You can rent a boat and paddle around Stow Lake the largest of the lakes. The Japanese Tea Garden is very popular, there was a long line to enter and it costs $4 - adults and $2 - children, so passed on this garden to see the lakes and the botanical gardens. The Japanese garden is known as a wet walking garden, although it has a Zen garden, and a dry garden area as well. The Japanese Tea Garden was first developed as the Japanese Village at the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, or World's Fair. It’s the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the United States. Probably should have stood in line to see it..next time. Besides the Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens to see, there is the California Academy of Science building. Leave a Comment

by smschley The largest and best known park in San Francisco is the 1,017 acre Golden Gate Park. Its history goes back to 1870 when the site was an area of wild sand dunes. At the time, the area , known as 'outside lands', was well outside the city's developed limits. A three-mile rectangle of green that runs from the upper Haight all the way to the beach, Golden Gate is one of the best urban parks in America and offers something for almost every city dweller, and a whole lot of visitors besides. In 1871, William Hall Civil engineer was hired as superintendent of the park to convert the sand dunes into forested parkland. Innovative sand reclamation techniques were used and a dike was built to protect the park from the sea. In 1887 nature lover, John McLaren succeeded William Hall, and during the next 56 years he planted thousands of trees and converted the area into the park as we know it today. Today the park is popular for its sports facilities which include tennis, pétanque, golf, fly-fishing, biking, inline skating, archery, handball and horseback riding. On weekends, the meadows in the park are used by many visitors as picnic grounds. Attracting more than 12 million visitors yearly, Golden Gate Park is a great place to feel far away from the hustle & bustle of the city. I have fond memories of breaking out the Frisbee and tossing it with friends. Of course the hair is just a fond memory also. Nature lover? Wander through jungle-like rhododendron dells, trickling waterfalls and a million trees. Music lover? Catch a concert at the outdoor bandstand or join the everlasting drum circle on what locals call Hippie Hill. Just a lover? Rent a rowboat on Stow Lake or get married at the Shakespeare garden. While the park also houses main attractions (Conservatory of Flowers; M.H. De Young Museum; Japanese Tea Garden, Buffalo paddock, Morrison Planetarium, Asian Art Museum, Steinhart Aquarium and the Strybing arboretum.), I don’t think of them as really part of the park. See info on them on separate entries. Leave a Comment

For a low cost, relaxing day in San Francisco, take a bus out to Golden Gate Park in the western suburbs. This surprisingly extensive park is home to a beautiful Japanese garden with a popular tea-house that you have to queue for if you want to sit and sip tea in a picture postcard setting, while tourists gawk and take photos of you. To enter the Japanese garden you must pay a small fee of about US$3.50 from memory. The Strybing Arbouretum is located in the park too, and makes a really interesting stroll. There is a section of the arbouretum dedicated to trees from New Zealand. Watching squirrels play in a pohutukawa tree is a strange experience! Take a picnic lunch and enjoy a sunny day in the peaceful surrounds of Golden Gate Park. Leave a Comment Directions: Buses #5, 7, 71 and 21 will get you to Golden Gate Park from the downtown area.

by heryanta Golden Gate Park is a huge park located at Northwest San Francisco. I like this park because unlike the most famous park in the US, the Central park, when you are inside you cannot see the skyscrapers and buildings in the city. Thus you can totally relax and detach from the chaos and the hectic modern living. There are a lot to do at the park: you can of course jog, picnic and do the usual park-things but there are also attractions worth seeing including the Japanese garden, the conservatory, and de Young museum of fine arts. I spent half a day at the park but if you like nature you can spend the whole day - a truly great way to relax and detach.

Since I work in the financial district most of the time during the day it had been a while, but last week I finally got a chance to go back and enjoy one of my favorite parks anywhere, Golden Gate Park. I have so many fond memories and there are so many different and beautiful parts to see it would take at least one travelogue to even come close (maybe someday). For now here's a pic I took last week in Shakespeare Garden. Leave a Comment

Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco by Andraf The Conservatory of Flowers is a beautiful glass structure which shelters more than 20000 rare and exotic plants. The oldest building in Golden Gate Park, the conservatory is modeled after a greenhouse in London's Kew Gardens. It was manufactured in Ireland for a San Jose millionaire, James Lick, who died before its arrival. The disassembled structure was purchased by a group of businessmen and donated to the Golden Gate Park. The building was severely damaged by a severe storm in 1995 and it was closed for repairs until 2003 but today you can visit it daily from 9am to 4.30 pm ($5 admission). They have two rooms dedicated to the tropics and one of them has many delicate orchids, very beautiful. I also remember an aquatic plants section and a room with potted plants which really appealed to my mother-in-law who has a passion for potted plants. Leave a Comment

Flower conservatory by canbalci It is a good idea to get a map of Golden Gate Park before tou enter the park(most city maps will have a Golden Gate section). Golden Gate is a really nice park in the city where you can go for a picnic, a jog, or just to have a lazy day snoozing on the green fields. Some places you can visit in the park are the Sharon Meadows (listen to the drummers on Saturdays and Sundays!), Japanese Gardens, Botanical Garden, and Shakespeare Garden. Leave a Comment

view from Sutro Park by canbalci Take a left and past the Cliff House you will come to Sutro Park. (Though it is right on the way it can be a little tricky to get there and you might have to take some extra turns - so take a city map with you). Sutro park has great views of the pacific - and you can walk down to a pathway by the Ocean that has great views of the Golden gate. This trail goes all the way to Lands End. You can get more information from these links: http://www.cityhikes.com/ch07land.html http://www.sealrockinn.com/sutropark.html One word of caution: A friend of mine said that Sutro Park might not be so safe after dark, and I've also read it on a website. It is totally safe during the day so that was weird to me, but I'll warn you anyway. Just don't go there at night. Leave a Comment Directions: Up the hill from the intersection of Pt. Lobos and 48th Ave., east of the Cliff House.
