Bordered to the north by Marina Boulevard, this very affluent residential area (average price of a home here is 1.5 MILLION US Dollars! while in other San Francisco neighborhoods is between 600 to 900 Thousand US Dollars), adjacent to a bayside marina, boasts remarkable views of the Golden Gate, fresh breezes, and lovely homes. Marina Green, a stretch of green grass running along the edge of the Bay, is a favorite place especially for singles, such activities like jogging, strolling, picnicking, and kite flying.

Here in the Marina district, apartment buildings, shops and restaurants seem to be bursting at their seams with beautiful, young and fit 20- and 30-somethings. The singles scene is hopping on Friday and Saturday nights, with lots of fresh-faced postgrads with cocktails in one hand and cell phones in the other. Union is arguably the best street in the city to window-shop the hours away on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and, a few blocks down, Chestnut has an incredible variety of high-quality restaurants catering to every palate.

    MARINA District: Marina District
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the Marina District on a beautiful San Francisco day. It's got some great city views, especially along Marina Green, right on the bay. See the Golden Gate Bridge in all it's glory, and some gorgeous scenes across the bay. The boats are all there, and the houses are beautiful too. And, you're right near the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts building too.

MARINA District: One of my favorite neighborhoods!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Marina district is an attractive, affluent neighborhood with beautiful Bay views. The Marina Green is the area near where lots of yachts and boats dock, and San Franciscans jog and picnic. During July 4th, fireworks are also held in the Marina. Many of the Marina district's houses are very expensive and impressive. This neighborhood is great for relaxing, window-shopping (or shopping if you are not on a budget), and enjoying the views of the Bay and the boats! Additionally, it is very close to the Palace of Fine Arts (a SF landmark) as well as the Presidio (where George Lucas's Lucasfilm is). The only unfortunate thing about this neighborhood is that the houses are built on a landfill...thus, they suffered significant damages during the major earthquakes.

  • Directions: Marina Boulevard - accessible by the #22, 28, 30, 43, 76, and 30x buses.

    MARINA District: Colourful boats
  • Tip Rating:

  • Okay, I have to admit that there was one more thing that I liked here, and that was seeing all these colourul fishing boats in the harbour.

    MARINA District: Wave organ
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful spot to see the skyline and added plus is the bizarre sounds coming from this scientific marvel.

  • Directions: Difficult to find. Directly west of Golden Gate Bridge is a marina. Walk to the end of the marina along a dirt path and wave organ is at the end.

  • The wooden houses in the Marina District.
This was the area hit hardest by the 1989 earthquake. Surprisingly many of these old small houses survived very well!

  • Tip Rating:
  • MARINA It’s a yuppie neighborhood and it’s evident by the cars parked outside and the boutiques on Union Street and Chestnut Street. Here in Marina you’ll find Palace of Fine Arts/Exploratorium located on Baker Street. Also be sure to check out Presido former military base. Of course, the most famous symbol of all in SF is Golden Gate Bridge, SF’s pride and joy. Completed in May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge stands at 745 feet tall, stretches about 2 miles long and cost $35 million . The color red was chosen by the architect Irving Morrow instead of the traditional gray or black. Good choice, Irving! Many people think the name 'Golden Gate' alludes to the bridge’s color, but the name refers to the Gold Rush era. You can walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. By car there is a $3 toll coming into SF. (Note: you cannot walk nor bike across the other bridge, Bay Bridge.)

    MARINA District: Marina District
The Marina District was built on lagoon and marshland filled for use during the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. Remaining from the exhibition is the Palace of Fine Arts designed by Bernard Maybeck. Today, the Palace houses the Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum containing 650 interactive exhibits. This is perhaps the best place in town to experience the magic of early spring colors in SF. According to information I saw at the entrance, city administration will undertake some restoration works in order to preserve this unique place.

    MARINA District: Burton Park
US Representative Phillip Burton of San Francisco led the effort to establish the Golden Gate Recreation Area. He also helped to enlarge the national parks, and the country's system of wild and scenic rivers. He is memorialized here, at this small park near the Marinas in San Francisco.
