Popularly known as Mission Dolores, it is one of the oldest intact building in the City of San Francisco and the only intact Mission Chapel in the chain of 21 established under the direction of Father Serra. The rough-hewn redwood roof timbers are still lashed together with rawhide. The alter is one of the most ornate mission alters. There is a small museum. The photo is taken from behind the towers of the Basilica in the cemetery garden. The website says: "Mission Dolores is the final resting place of some 5,000 Ohlone, Miwok, and other First Californians who built Mission Dolores and were its earliest members and founders. Other notables include the first Mexican governor, Luis Antonio Arguello, the first commandant of the Presidio, Lieutenant Moraga, and victims of the Committee of Vigilance, Cora, Casey, and Sullivan. Cemetery markers date from 1830 to about 1898. "The curator of Old Mission San Francisco de Asis is Brother Guire Cleary, S.S.F. His office hours are generally 9:00am-3:00pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays" The mission is open daily 9-4. Admission $2. Over 64 $1. The basilica is still an active church. It is a combination of Moorish, Mission and Corinthian styles. Basilica Religions Services: Saturday Evening Vigil: 5:00pm in the Old Mission Chapel Sunday Morning: 8:00am, 10:00am, and 12:00pm (Spanish Mass) in the Basilica Daily: 7:30am in the Old Mission Chapel, 9:00am in the Basilica Holy Days: 7:30am in the Old Mission , 9:00am and 7:00pm in the Basilica (Bilingual Mass) Holy Hour: Friday 6:00pm in the Old Mission, First Friday includes Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Rosary: Weekdays before the 9:00am Liturgy in the Basilica Reconciliation: Individual - Saturday 4:00-5:00pm or by appointment Leave a Comment

Dolores Park, Mission by katpanou You won't find the Mission on the front page of many travel guides but if you want to have a slice of real SF life have a beer and a burrito at Mission. It can be dangerous at some points but it definitely is one of the most popular neighbourhoods of SF at the moment Dont forget to relax at the Dolores Park with some fine views over the city and the Mission Dolores just beneath it. by keeweechic The Basilica- was completed in 1918 and replaces the parish church that was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake It features stained glass windows depicting Saint Francis of Assisi who is the patron of both the Mission and the City of San Francisco. .The Basilica also has a wood carving of Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows, set high above the main alter in a sun burst pattern. The Mission has been honoured by the Pope twice in the last 50 years. . Leave a Comment

by keeweechic Mission Delores is the oldest building in San Francisco, is located at the spiritual centre of its namesake, the Mission District. Founded in 1776, the first mass was held in June, five days before the Declaration of Independence was signed (although formal Church documentation didn’t officially establish the mission until October of that year and the building itself was not completed until 1791). The building managed to survive the 1906 earthquake. It has 4 foot thick adobe walls, redwood beams lashed together with rawhide to support the room and the ceiling is painted with vegetable dyes. . by keeweechic This was a colonial style cemetery to the left of the Mission which contained the tombstones of Spanish, Mexican, American and other settlers. It also had the graves of more than 5,000 Native Americans who were enslaved in the area. The cemetery’s biggest claim to fame was its use as the setting for the graveyard scenes in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 film Vertigo. . Leave a Comment

photo by Lorna by Callavetta Keep your eyeballs peeled everywhere. Art abounds in unlikely places. Sometimes, like this wall in the Castro, can't be missed because they jump right out at you! Leave a Comment

There's a very old cemetery on the Mission Dolores' back garden. It's worth a visit and walk around the century old graves.

This is a funky area, perhaps a bit dirty, very ecclectic with all kinds of cultures represented. The best part is all the murals. Leave a Comment

by isolina_it Perhaps one of the most lively in the mexican district, go down to the 24th, turn street and find yourself in the middle of mexican life and shops

by keeweechic Inside the Bascillica The Basilica has a wood carving of Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows, set high above the main alter in a sun burst pattern. Pope John Paul II paid a visit to the Mission and this is documented with photographs along the covered walkway to the left of the Basilica. . Leave a Comment
