The Beat Museum, learn about Kerouac and others by newsphotogirl I like this part of town. It has a lot of character. Most of the restaurants are good. Cute shops. Washington Square Park is across Union Street next to Saints Peter and Paul Church. It's a good location for people and dog watching. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their picture taken here after their City Hall wedding. I brought my mother and step-father to Cafe Trieste for coffee and ended up talking to a local poet who pointed us in the direction of the Beat Museum just up the street. My step-father grew up during that era so he enjoyed the experience. Later we walked to the City Lights Bookstore, another hangout for Kerouac and Ginsberg. Leave a Comment

SS. Peter and Paul Church by geeyook Know as the "Italian Cathedral", the Romanesque style Saints Peter and Paul Church was designed after the 1906 earthquake. Building did not start until 1912 and was completed in 1924. The 40 ft marble/onyx Italian alter was made in Italy shipped to San Francisco and reassembled. The church has been featured in many feature films. Contrary to popular belief, Joe DiMaggio did not marry Marilyn Monroe here. He was married at City Hall and went back to the church for wedding photos. Leave a Comment

I'm not sure how to describe this show. It's not exactly musical theater. But it is a definate must-see. I guarantee you haven't seen anything like it. There is a good reason it's been sold out for over 30 years. Be prepared to laugh hard. The costumes are so outragously over the top and the singing is wonderful. Many skits are linked to pop culture with social commentary. I always take my out of town guests to a show and they love it. Make sure to get there about an hour early for good seats. Leave a Comment

North Beach by geeyook In addition to being San Francisco's Little Italy, it was the home to the San Francisco's "Beat Generation" in the 1950's. The neighborhood has many of the city's best cafe's, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and coffee shops. Leave a Comment

Boring during the day by D._Pepper North Beach rocks. At night. Cool clubs. Jazz mostly. Pearl's is good. If you're a smoker, better bring nicotine patches. No smoking in all bars. Not even cigars are allowed! Leave a Comment

Beach Blanket Babylon by ahendley Beach Blanket Babylon is a cabaret show that has been running in San Francisco continuously since 1974, first at the Savoy Tivoli now at the Club Fugazi, both in North Beach. It's hard to explain this show, but the shtick is over-the-top musical satire of political figures (Clinton, Bush, our Mayor et al) and the pop flavor of the month (Britney, Backstreet Boys, Madonna, et al). Outrageous puns and costumes - you should have seen king Louis XIV in all his ancien regime splendor singing the immortal rock lament Louie, Louie. The numbers change to keep current, but the hats remain, getting bigger each year. In the photo, that's a hat(!) with the Transamerica Pyramid and most of the rest of San Francisco sitting on top of it. This is a cabaret, old chum, and because of the puritanical drinking laws in the US, persons under 21 are admitted only to matinee performances Leave a Comment Directions: In North Beach. You can't miss it. (Green Street) Phone: 415.421.4222 E-mail: bbb@beachblanketbabylon.com Web Site

by Monique_T We were just walking around a bit and then we came to Little Italy...nice places where you can sit outside and have lunch or just a coffee or something else. It was lovely to sit outside while the sun was shining, very relaxing. And hear all the Italian people talking.. Leave a Comment

by Livermore North Beach is where I go for my morning coffe. This is mostly an Italian neighborhood. The food here is spectacular. I have eaten at many restaurants in this neighborhood and I have honestly never had a bad meal. But the coffee is what keeps me coming back. There are also a number of good bars in this area. Irish pubs and micro brew pubs can be found here. Leave a Comment Directions: North Beach borders Chinatown and the Fishermans wharf area.

View of North Beach by zChris Funky, crazy, and European are just a few adjectives that describe North Beach, the favourite neighbourhood of many visitors and San Franciscans alike. Evolving from an enclave of Genoese dock workers in the early part of the century to the famed haunt of Beat-era poets, writers, and musicians in the 1950s, North Beach is both an ethnic neighbourhood and a bohemian one- although both those identities have become more and more endangerd as housing costs in the neighbourhood grow. Nevertheless, the original atmopsheres of this district of stucco Mediterranean-style buildings are still in visual evidence. Walk up the neighbourhood's principal thoroughfare, Columbus Avenue, and be sure to take in the view back toward the Transamerica Pyramid, with the beautiful old Columbus tower in the foreground. The Columbus Tower is home to the offices of director Francis Ford Coppola, and his new Café Niebaum-Coppola at its base is reputed to be excellent. Further up Columbus is the legendary Café Vesuvio, the haunt of the Beat poets. Just across Jack Kerouac Alley (named for the most famous Beat of them all) is City Lights Books, another former Beat hangout. Up the street a little more is the beautiful Shrine of St. Francis of Asissi, a striking little stucco church. Of course, it is thoroughlly eclipsed by another church, the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, whose white spires reach skyward majestically. The church sits on Washington Square, an impeccably maintained little park that serves as the neighbourhood's central gathering place. In the mornings many people doing Tai Chi can be seen in the park, evidence of the creeping influence of Chinatown which has begun to invade North Beach. Up Filbert Street and the Filbert Steps is, of course the most famous landmark in North Beach, the Coit Tower. Of course, simply seeing the more visited sights in the neighbourhoods does not allow one to experience it. To truly get to know North Beach, stroll amongst the cafés, peak into the delis, and go to a jazz club. Leave a Comment
