In stark contrast to the traditional, old-world style of the nearby Grace Cathedral, the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption is built in an ultra-modern style. The design, by Pietro Belluschi and Pier Luigi Nervi, uses a hyperbolic parabaloid to create a giant cross. Soaring 190 feet high, it's plainly visible from many points around the city.

An interesting icon in modern architecture of a church designed using both modern contemporary innovation and traditional features of what a church should be like.

For those into architecture, this is from the official website:

"The cathedral's striking design flows from the geometric principal of the hyperbolic parabaloid, in which the structure curves upward in graceful lines from the four comers meeting in a cross. Measuring 255 feet square, the cathedral soars to 190 feet high and is crowned with a 55 foot golden cross."
