Just across the street from Washington Square, at the heart of San Francisco's Little Italy, lies the beautiful Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Completed in 1924, the church is easy to spot thanks to its twin spires that rise to a height of 191 feet. There are many interesting architectural details inside the church as well, including a replica of Michelangelo's La Pieta just to the right of the main altar, and a replica of the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes at the back of the church.

Baseball fans might be interested to know that American baseball player Joe Di Maggio got married to Dorothy Arnold at Saints Peter and Paul Church in 1939. Later on when Di Maggio got married to Marilyn Monroe, even though the wedding ceremony was a civil affair performed at the San Francisco City Hall, the couple went to Saints Peter and Paul Church to have their picture taken. When the baseball legend died in 1999, his funeral was also held at the North Beach church.

    Truly cosmopolitan

St. Paul & Peter Cathedral, Columbus Ave.

Walking down the streets of downtown San Francisco let one see how truly cosmopolitan SFO is. There are numerous beautiful cathedrals hidden between those narrow streets. And there is no better way to find them but by walking through the streets. Unless you are trying to challenge your driving skills, you'd be happier walking through the streets of SFO than driving.

Loads of quaint shops and restaurants. It's wonderful to unhurriedly roam those streets on a weekend evening.

The italian Cathedral- Sts Peter and Paul Church

by Nemoa Written Dec 12, 2004 162 reviews

This is a must see I think.
It is called the Italian Cathedral as it was designed by architect Charles Fantoni in an italianesque style. It has a very nice interior with plenty of columns and stautes and some interesting stained glass artworks.

If you are Italian maybe you will like to visit it. Mass is held in Italian, Chinese and English and it is a favourite worship place among the Italian population of the city.
