The location is kind of inconvenient. I think the 39 Muni only runs every 1/2 hour so we had to wait a long time, and then you gotta hike back down a series of steps. We got some decent pics of the city (taken through the thick glass windows at the top of the tower) but for the effort, it just was not that exciting.
Unique Suggestions: At least take the bus, do not try to walk it! It is up a lot higher than it may appear.
Fun Alternatives: Take a Bay Cruise offered by Blue and Gold Ferries. You have to brave Fishermans Wharf to do this, but it is a good way to get some great pics of the whole city and the water. Riding on a boat is kind of more exciting than riding up an elevator.

You guys are lazy bums!
First of all: Coit tower has to be reached walking! It's such a nice time climbing the hill...
Secondly, you gotta be there in the night time...it's one of the most romantic places I ever seen! Try to go with the person you love in a beautiful summer night and you will get the real spirit of Frisco!

Coit Tower was a serious disappointment. The bus up to the tower runs very rarely - I waited over a half hour before it arrived. Better to walk there and take the stairs up. There aren't too many, and that's where you get the best views anyway.
Telegraph Hill itself is very nice. Lovely and green, and a great view of the city through the trees. Enjoy the view from there, and don't waste the $3.75 to ride the elevator to the top of the Tower. All you get a chilly circular room with windows and a superb vista of the Bay Bridge. Hello Oakland.
You can't even get good shots of that, because all the windows have locked panes over them.
Of course, if you're a big history buff, the Tower does have an interesting origin as a Fire Station. Or something like that.
Unique Suggestions: Ponder how all those coins got on the outside sill of the windows.
Were there once no panes? Did someone climb above the windows and drop them down with ferocious good aim?
If you broke the window panes and collected all the coins, would you have enough to drink away your sorrow at having actually paid for this?
Fun Alternatives: Just take some shots from Telegraph Hill. Be sure to go in the morning hours, or the sun will ruin your view of the Golden Gate.
Or buy a postcard. It's almost as good, and about $3.25 less.
