Fisherman's Wharf: Eating at the Wharf
Here is one of the many outdoor stands where you can find big pots of crab cooking in addition to clam chowder bread bowls and all kinds of seafood delights. Be aware that you might not get the best value for your money here. You're paying for location and for the tourist experience. If you don't want to buy it's at the very least fun to watch for a little while.

Fisherman's Wharf: No, Fishermans Wharf is very interesting.
I agree with you. Fishermans Wharf is very boring. Only if you stick to places where stores are and other people go.

But be inventive. Look around, walk into corners. FW is huge. It containes about 10 WORKING! piers. With real fishermen and boats and ships and birds. There are many hidden places. Well, see it for yourself at my home site www.virtuar.com/ysf2/. A word about very boring Ghirardelly square. Step on the balckony right over the "builders bookstore". This is one of the best views of the cities with the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and real big sailing ship. Wow!

Fisherman's Wharf is filled with fantastical views of the bay and the city. My advice - forget about the souvenir shops and restaurants and look around. But that is a universal advice for any traveler. FW extends for several miles from Pier 39 to Ghirardelly along most beautiful seaside smothly turning into Fort Mason on one side and into Embarcadero on another one. It is an essential part of a walk around the city.

Fisherman's Wharf: Blah!
I don't know who all of this would appeal to, but it's just one tacky store after another. It may bring good money in to the city, but for anyone who wants to actually see the place they came to visit and not ugly plastic models of landmarks, don't go here.

Head out west towards the ocean, away from the Wharf. You'll come to the Marina eventually, which is very pretty and offers wonderful views of the Golden Gate Bridge. There are several buses that run the route is the 1Km walk is not to your liking.

If you want somewhere that's still very open to accepting tourists, yet has more flavor and interest to it, go to the Powell Street and Union Square area. Lots more to see.

Fisherman's Wharf: I heard that Fisherman's Warf...
I heard that Fisherman's Warf was a tourist trap, and it really is. There is so much more to see in SF that you don't need to go to that area. Not even Ghirardelli square. Nothing to see.

Fisherman's Wharf: You are the one who's going to be fished...
I think that many people will include this one in their must see activities. Well, for me it is a must see but I have decided that you have to be careful there because this definitely is a tourist trap. If you are a family with kids, beware! restaurants are quite expensive and although you can taste the local delicacies as the dungeness crab and the SF chowder in sourdough bread they will rip you off. You can give this a try outside the pier at some little shops and stalls that you will find on your right as you leave the complex. I had lunch at one of the restaurants and although the food was good and the views quite nice I regretted it aferwards as I think I paid like five times the reasonable price for a chowder and a salad. Up to you. You are warned now. Worst places in my humble opinion: the Ripley's Believe it or not museum and the little shops selling all sorts of tacky but not cheap souvenirs of SF.

One place that might be worth visiting though is the Boudin Bakery, where you can buy the delicious bread typical of S. The pier 39 is a nice sight too. Maybe I am just a stupid little one who likes seals but I found the colony a very refreshing sight. And the seals were quite an entertaining sight. A must see if you have got kids, I think

I don't think there is really an alternative for this. You have to visit it, I think, but just be aware that everything is more expensive there and that your kids will drive you crazy to buy them all sorts of expensive but useless crap. So go, visit, enjoy it and don't buy !!

Fisherman's Wharf: A Shameful Waste of Valuable Bayside Urban Land
In a city full of tourist traps, this place takes the cake. It is the stupidest place I have ever been. And yes, I have been to the tacky raodside giftshops and rodeo museums in the American West. This place is an embarassment to the people of the Bay Area. I don't know why anyone would want to come here. Parents may think kids may get a thrill out of the "earthqauke ride" or the flashy lights and arcades. But you can find gift shops selling license plate keychains pretty much anywhere. Just take the kids to the nearest Six Flags, and skip Fisherman's Wharf.

If you want to see real Wharfs, walk down to the other piers where you can see the huge ships pretty close (I was there before September 11). The kids will like that.

Fisherman's Wharf: Fisherman's Wharf - Meeting point for tourists!

Is Fisherman's Wharf a must visit or a tourist trap to avoid? Let's explain our vision. Fisherman's Wharf was the base of a rather large fishing fleet up untill the 1940s. Now it's the place to be if you like all kinds of tourists attractions, seefood restaurants with waterfront views, et cetera. It is loosely defined as the area Ghirardelli Square (near Pier 41) and Pier 35. Of course we went to Fisherman's Wharf, by Cable Car and intended not to stay long. But in some we liked it as well. We rapidly learned that there were more things to see in San Francisco than this meeting point for tourists. But we also did realize that it is not just about the more established attractions and shops. There are plenty of sidewalk activities taking place. We enjoyed the street performers including: artists, musicians, craft makers, magicians, human robots, you name it! Keep an eye open for the "Bushman" who for the last 25 years has some branches to hide behind on the sidewalk to surprise and welcome passres by. Address: Beach Street and the Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, CA 94109. Directions: It is loosely defined as the area Ghirardelli Square (near Pier 41) and Pier 35.

See the sea lions.

Sorry...maybe it's also a must-see?

Fisherman's Wharf: Tacktastic
Lots of people love it, but I hated it - I'm talking about Fisherman's Wharf. It caters simply for the tourist and seems a different world from the rest of SF. Don't eat there - everything seemed more expensive and the quality just isn't the same. It's noisy and overcrowded and not worth a visit (in my opinion).

Watch the sealions for a few minutes, although smelly they are enormous fun.

Fisherman's Wharf: Fisherman's Wharf
Pier 39 is exspensive. The small aquarium is short and not worth the price. Often there is a street performer or show in the square or along the streets which is fun to see. There is an arcade their to. Just down the way off pier 39 is a Rainforest Cafe, Ripley's Believe it or Not museum and The Wax Museum. Along side streets away from the main street around there are very cheap places to buy a bundle of t-shirts and loads of cheap keychains and souveniers to get for friends back home. (A lot of Alcatraz T-shirts) I often buy San Francisco gifts for people there who want something with the word San Francisco on it. It's a good stop to get gifts. Some of the locals (my friends) are typically snobby and don't like tourist places but I still enjoy the area and love getting clam chowder in a breadbowl. Its my favorite thing!

I would avoid buying anything off pier 39 unless you really really want it. The other shops down the way have the same stuff cheaper. I would forget about parking their to it's exspensive. Go somewhere else and take the bus or cable car. I saw they recently raised thier prices to 5 bucks for the short ride. It used to be nice to go on them and pay a little more than the bus, but its to much for that now if you're local.
