Japanese Tea Garden
Part of the Golden Gate Park, I would have expected the intrance to be free. It was not !
I agree this kind of garden probably requires lots of manwork... At least it was very nice even if rather small …
Fun Alternatives: Unless you are really fond of these japanese stuff, I would rather recommend the botanical garden, not far from there …
Hey, So We Got Sucked In
The Japanese Tea Garden ($2 entry fee) in Golden Gate Park is so beautiful, you forget you are in a tourist trap. Even though there were hordes of people there, there were enough little nooks and crannies to have a zen moment. A great way to refresh yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city.
where to stay, where to go, where not to go
i would avoid fisherman's wharf. fisherman's wharf is no more san francisco than universal studios is los angeles.
if you want to see the real san francisco, go to dolores park. go to golden gate park, the castro, zeitgeist, the nautical museum, church and market. i don't know anyone living in SF who goes to fisherman's wharf. well, unless they want to see the bush man. fisherman's wharf is a tourist trap where there is no parking, not much SF culture (besides the actual fishermen) and prices for mediocre stuff is sky-high.
but the one touristy thing you should do is see the bridge. it's truly spectacular. alcatraz is probably out of the question since you have to reserve in advance. i would go get some fernet at pops bar (not with child) or go to the slides in GG park. (they have a playground just around lincoln and 5th with concrete slides that kids seem to love going down on cardboard). go to the mission district for some good mexican eats. go to chinatown. get a peking duck and chop it up for dinner.
if i were coming to SF, i would stay at a cheap hotel in the sunset or richmond. this is a tiny city and people are under the impression that they need to stay in union square to see anything. you could walk the entire length of the city in an hour or two. imagine how quickly you could get around with public transportation. stay in a cheap place and use muni.
there's a place called Beach Motel in the outer sunset.
it's totally a motel. i mean what you would expect. but it's around $85 a night and it's right by the beach, the MUNI runs right in front and it's just an affordable place to land when you're not on your feet anymore.
hope this helps. not sure what your interests are, as your question was rather broad.
Yosemite National Park
If you have a day to spare it is well worth looking up a tour company that covers this park. You will be picked up very early so keep off the beer the night before! A 0630 a.m. start is the norm as it`s a 200 plus mile drive to the park and you are there until 2230 p.m. return to Hotel. That sounds a long day but you will see some awesome sights on the trip and there are plenty of stops so take a decent camera to capture the mountains, waterfalls and the scenery in general. The Bridlewell Falls are one highlight towards the end of the tour so don`t waste time at the lodge buying burgers and t shirts or time will run out before you know it! Yes you may feel rushed at times as there is a lot to digest, but if you are with a good group that keeps to schedule, you should see everything including a final sun set stop below Bay Bridge looking over the city. That really puts the icing on the cake!
Unique Suggestions: Try and go mid week as it is not as busy and the roads are not as packed.
Fun Alternatives: Hard to find an alternative... Maybe the Napa Valley if you fancy wine tasting assuming you are going on a guided tour and not behind the wheel of a car!Related to:

trips to Yosemite
You spend 11 hours on the bus or train and only 3 hours in the park. It is not enough time to see everything. The tour companies normally do not coincide with the times the tour guides inside the park show you around anyway. Do not go in Oct or Nov because there was snow on the ground and some roads had ice. Most of the park was closed off anyway.
Unique Suggestions: Go in late spring or during the summertime. Go to the state of Wyoming and stay there instead of driving from San Francisco.
Also bring your own food or eat at one of the rest stops. The food in the park is not that great.
Golden Gate Park- Botanical Gardens- Tea Garden
Most of the flowers were not well kept and dried out. The tea garden was so small it took 3 minutes to go through it all not worth $3 at all.
Unique Suggestions: Go when they have a concert which is normally on weekends
Fun Alternatives: Yerba Buena Gardens
Legion of Honor
I have seen much better art museums than this. There was not much to their collection. One collection was in a foreign language. I really wanted to know what the description of the picture was about.
Unique Suggestions: I think it is free on Wed
Fun Alternatives: Walk outside of the building there is a nice view of the San Francisco Bridge.
For art go to Museum of Modern Art of Asian Art Museum.
Napa Valley California
Good US wines are hard to find
Many excellent wines are produced in the United States. California produces some outstanding wines that rival the best French, Italian and German vintages. Unfortunately, most US restaurants offer only a limited selection of mediocre wines. Most waiters and beverage store clerks do not understand wine and cannot recommend the best choices. The favorite wine offering in US restaurants is white Zinfandel, a low quality sweet wine. Only better quality restaurants offer a good selection of quality wines.
Unique Suggestions: California is the premier Wine country
Every state in the USA produces some wines. Most of the states produce at least a few good wines. Only California, Oregon and Washington states produce many excellent wines including some outstanding ones. California is the top producer of wines in the USA with thousands of wineries and many varieties of excellent wines.
Fun Alternatives: Choosing the best wines
It is very difficult to choose the best quality wines in the US except by knowing the reputation of the wine producers. The concept of terroir is not used in US wine making. Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, the most famous wine regions of California, produce many different varieties and different grades of wine. Vintage years are not very important in California as some great wines are usually produced every year. Price is definitely not a reliable indicator of quality or value. If you are not familiar with the names of the better wine producers in the US, ask a knowledgeable waiter or specialty wine store sales clerk for advice.Related to:

Aquarium of the Bay
Aquarium of the Bay takes you under the sea as you walk through tunnels and view marine creatures up close and personal. I would say that it could be an interesting activity for kids but as far as aquariums go, it is certainly not spectacular. It took me less than 30 minutes to get through the whole thing. The displays are very static and it just simply isn't worth the money to get in. If the price was reasonable, I would say it's a nice quick activity but because it's not, don't waste your money.
Unique Suggestions: Watch one of the feeding sessions, it's about the most exciting thing you will see. Also, if you have to, make sure that you use one of the free admission passes in the San Francisco City Pass rather than paying regular admission. It's not worth it!
Fun Alternatives: Take one of the harbour cruises or view the sea lions at pier 39. Or if the kids are really set on seeing some marine creatures, save money for a trip to San Diego and visit Seaworld!Related to:

If you go with a tour group they only give 45min to 1 hour. This only gets you up to bridge 3. From what I did see it was boring. Most of the trees were the same. There really was not much to the place.
