B.A.R.T: Riding BART is easy
Save your money! Don't take a cab from the airport to your hotel in downtown San Francisco. It is so easy to take the BART train to/from the airport and will only cost around $5/person. Even if you are staying up near Fisherman's Wharf you can at least take the BART as far as Powell station and then catch a cab up to your destination. The ticket machines are easy to figure out and the stations were surprisingly clean and not scary. This is also a cheap, fast way to get to Berkeley or Oakland.

The BART is a great way to get between the airport and the city. It's about $5.15 and a 30 minute trip. The stations are clean and easy to navigate. You can't really use the BART to get around town muc, use the buses for that.

    B.A.R.T: The Commuter Train Station
The commuter station is very conveniently located close to the new ballpark. It's great for those who are coming into town from the airport.

B.A.R.T: Getting to SF from airports
There are 2 major airports people use to fly in San Francisco: SF International Airport and Oakland International Airport. Both have BART trains stations nearby. From/To SF International Airport ROUT SF International Airport -> San Francisco. BART SFO/SF Roundtrip Ticket costs $10.70. This will allow you to travel from SFO to any of the downtown SF stations (Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery or Embarcadero) and back to SFO. BART tickets allow value to be added at station machines for additional travel, so you can use the $10.70 ticket throughout the system to add fare value if necessary. There is no time restriction. From/To Oakland International Airport ROUT Airport -> 15 minutes on a shuttle AirBART ($3) -> Airport BART Station($3.55) -> San Francisco. BART Travel Pack costs $13.10 and includes two $3 BART Tickets for use on the AirBART shuttle ( to get you to the Oakland Coliseum BART Station), and one $7.10 BART Ticket to ride BART to downtown San Francisco and back to the Oakland Coliseum BART Station. Fare is $3.55 each way. BART tickets allow value to be added at station machines for additional travel. Put the ticket in any dispensing machine and add currency or coin to match the fare of your destination, as displayed on the chart posted on machines, and a new ticket will be issued - if you add value to obtain the exact fare amount the ticket will not be returned at faregate exit and you will have to purchase a new ticket from a machine or vendor for additional travel. Save one of the $3 tickets initially received for use on the AirBart Bus as you will need this to return to Oakland International Airport. There is no time restriction for this pass.

B.A.R.T: An economical way into San Francisco
Departing or arriving into the San Francisco airport is now the economical way to travel on B.A.R.T. - Bay Area Rapid Transit. If you're arriving from a flight into San Francisco and are on a budget, definitely take BART into the city or over to Oakland and beyond. It is fairly quick and beats traffic and tolls. Taking BART to the San Francisco International Airport is just as easy. From there take the Airtrain (Complimentary) to your terminal where your airline is located. If you're coming in from an International flight, there are currency exchange kiosks in the terminal. Exchange a bit of money before taking BART as they do not have a currency exchange there and you would have to go back out. The BART station does have machines that can give you change in USD currency bills and coins.

    B.A.R.T: BART from SFO
If you are flying into San Francisco these days, the BART subway extension is now open and it's a great way to get downtown cheap and quick - if you are staying in any of the financial district hotels (such as the Hyatt or the Marriott on Market street) you won't have much of a walk from the BART station to the hotel. Trains run about every 15 minutes, and the cost to downtown (from SF Airport to the Embarcadero station, which is the last station in the city before crossing the bay ) is $4.95 (compared to about $35 for a cab). Be careful when going TO the airport from San Francisco, because not every train makes it to the airport - check the route maps and the signs on each train

    B.A.R.T: BART
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (or BART) is yet another one of San Francisco's mass trans systems operated independently from MUNI. However unlike MUNI, BART operates for much of a good portion of the Bay Area. BART begins in Fremont, travels north through Oakland (where tributary lines that go out to the regions east of the Bay Area connect), dives underneath the San Francisco Bay, goes underneath San Francisco, and ends near San Bruno. There are plans at this time to extend BART even further to San Jose and Milbrae and eventually create a kind of loop around the Bay Area. BART is a little more expensive than MUNI as it goes out farther, but if you're in the East Bay or in the city and want to travel a little more, it's a great, quick way to get around.

B.A.R.T: You can't share a ticket on the BART
This may sound dumb, but we learned the hard way that you can't share tickets on the BART. Because the machines let us put several dollars on our ticket, we figured we'd be economical and save a tree and use just one paper between us, passing it back and forth as we each went through the gates. Well, we were stopped by a very surly cop on our way out who bullied us about it. We told him we had plenty of money on the ticket for both of us, but he was about to fine us! He ended up charging our ticket for a couple extra rides (pretty rude!) and letting us go. Then we saw signs that said we each had to have our own ticket--but there were NO such signs where we bought the ticket!

    B.A.R.T: United Airlines offers service...
United Airlines offers service to San Francisco from around the globe. BART-Bay Area Rapid Transit. The most economical, least challenging way to go. Parking is scary and scarce in 90% of The City, so leave your car at home. Once you step off BART, put on your walking shoes and windbreaker then, hit the streets. You can walk from A to B quicker than you might think. Walking is THE BEST way to see San Francisco.
