By Car: hill parking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Imagine, before I moved to Seattle I barely knew how to parallel park. I definitely failed that portion of my licensing exam when I was younger. After much practice in Seattle, I was thoroughly impressed with the way I handled driving/parking on the hills of SF.

The F line is a recent wonderful addition to San Francisco. In 2000, San Francisco, after decades of effort, completely refurbished and put into operation several antique streetcars and trolleys from all around the world. The F line runs from Castro, down Market, along the Embarcadero (waterfront) and all the way to Fisherman's wharf. The F line is operated by Muni, so your Muni pass and transfers will work on this line. The line is fun to ride and very scenic.

SF MUNI: Best way to get around the City - Muni Bus System
  • Tip Rating:
  • When I first moved to San Francisco, I heard nonstop complaints about the muni bus system. That has changed. One thing our former Mayor Willie Brown did was hire a crackerjack director who bought new buses, donated the old ones to the Salt Lake City Olympics and whipped the system into shape. I use the Muni to go all over San Francisco. The fare is $1.25 per trip (or you can buy a day pass for buses and cable cars). For your $1.25, you get a transfer that will allow you to get back on any bus, officially for 90 minutes, but the bus drivers are VERY lax about this. Transfers are good on the trolleys and F line, but not the cable car.

Cable Cars: The famous San Francisco Cable Cars.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Cable Cars ,in San Francisco are a unique thing and they are the only railway in the street where the cars are not powered on their own . Under the rails there is a large cable that is powered and moved by a central powerhouse and this cable underneath continuous moves and the Cable Car then is '' Gripping '' on to this Cable. Then a '' Gripman '' controls the movement and the speed of the Cable Car which I will show later in another picture. It is all wonderful to watch this and amazing how this'' Gripman '' then controls his Cable Car.Very very interesting to see all this DO NOT MISS a CABLE CAR ride when in San Francisco. In this picture the Cable Car is at the '' Turnaround at Powell & Market street the route goes down to '' Fishermans Wharf '' It goes back up ,then gets turned around .

If you want to make a side trip to Marin County, taking the ferry is the most relaxing way to do it. Ferries run regularly all day to and from Larkspur and Sausalito. Not a car ferry, but you may may bring bicycles.

This gentleman is called the '' Gripman ''This person is responsible for the passengers in the Cable Car.He oversees how many get on and also of course controls the stop and go of the Cable Car using these long handles that go underneath the Cable Car . I do not know excactly how ,I do know that is was noisy and very tough job to do. I was amazing to see how steep the streets were up and down.

    Walking: Seque tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • Want to spend 3 hours moving about SF (primarily the Wharf area) and not have to walk? Check out the Segue Tours. From the tours website, you will see: *Fisherman's Wharf and the picturesque fishing harbor *Cable Car turnaround *Ghirardelli Square (home of delicious chocolate!) *National Maritime Museum and the historic sailing ships *Fort Mason (former military base, now a historic landmark) *Marina Green (where the locals sunbathe and fly kites) *Palace of Fine Arts (once the site of the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition) *St Francis and Golden Gate Yacht Clubs *Views of Alcatraz The tour is $65 and participants must be a minimum of 12 years of age. My personal advice is get a bike. You'll save money and enjoy yourself more.

Cable Cars: SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CARS
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cable Car transportation in San Franciso are both fun and inexpensive. The cost is $3.00 per person one way and $6.00 per person return. I paid for our return tickets ahead of time so as not to have to wait in line again on the way back. While I got in line for the tickets, Hans got in line for the cable cars, which were quite long on the day we went. the tickets were on a collector series card telling about the history of the cable car which you can keep as a souvenir. The conducter simply takes the part of the ticket which says $3.00. All in all it was a fun way to get around San Francisco.
