By Air: For Budget Travelers, Oakland may be the ticket
It was cheaper (and non-stop) for us to fly Nashville to Oakland than in to San Francisco from Nashville or Atlanta. We took a BART bus to the BART station at the Oakland Airport, then the BART train to the Embarcadero station - it's easy - we just followed the signs at the airport. Then we took a taxi to the hotel. There is plenty of room for luggage on BART.

The savings for 1 person may not be substantial, but multiplied by 4 - it was well worth it.

    By Air: San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
    San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the hub center for International arrivals from all over the world. Very modern facility.
    SFO has (my opinion) very nice, wide aisles even when crowded. International restaurants, convenient services all around and very large center. I guess if anything negative to say is long walk from check-in to departing gates depending on Airline used.

    By Air: San Francisco Airport
    San Francisco airport is located about 14 miles south of downtown San Francisco along Highway 101. It is accessible by car, public bus, or BART, and the CalTrain takes you to the nearby Milbrae BART station. Long-term parking is available for $12 per hour while short-term parking is $1 for each 12 minutes ($5 per hour). The airport's AirTrain connects all the terminals, the rental car counters, and all parking areas except long-term parking, which has a shuttle bus to and from the airport.

    SFO offers wireless internet access, but they charge a fee. From my recent travels it seems that about 75% of American airports have free wireless for their customers, so I'm not sure why this airport is so cheap that it has to charge.

    San Francisco is served by three international airports. The largest of the three is San Francisco International, or SFO for short. The airport is located around five miles down from the city center in the suburb of South San Francisco. Virtually all international flights come into here, as well as a great deal of domestic as well. SFO has gone under some major reconstruction over the last ten years. There's now a huge and spectacular international terminal that greets people flying from overseas. At the moment, they're completing a BART terminal here, which finally links the airport with the city's metro network. So if you see some contruction cranes nearby, you'll understand why.

    Further away and across the bay is Oakland International, which serves some international flights and a great deal of domestic. It's known to be one of the cheaper airports to come in and out of in the Bay Area.

    Finally the furthest of all is San Jose International 40 miles south, which serves the Silicon Valley.

    This is the airport to go if you want to visit San Francisco.
    Upon reaching the airport, you can either take B.A.R.T, Caltrain or Samtrans to bring you to your destination.
    You can also rent a car from San Francisco International Airport’s Rental Car Center.

    By Air: From Brussels to SF
    Unfortunately, there is no direct flight Brussels - SF.

    Some of the possibilities are :
    * Brussels-Washington-SF
    * Brussels-London-SF
    I did :
    Brussel-Paris by train (TGV/Thalys: 1h)
    Paris-SF

    It should have been a good idea, you avoid all the security check at a 3d airport...

    ... well not that sure : Once we finally were in the plane, we had to wait 3h untill the crew finally told us the airport was closed due to frost and snow!!
    I was flying with United Airline, not that sure this is normal behaviour in such a case but their reaction was simply: "try to find a hotel yourself, we'll take offf tomorrow at 8am"...

    By Air: Dublin to San Francisco
    We flew from Dublin to London with Aer Lingus and then on to San Francisco with Virgin. I had been out clubbing in Kilkenny the night before and an hour after I got home we left for Dublin at 4am. For some bizarre reason I didn't sleep on the plane - I guess as 17 year olds have lots of energy. This was my first transatlantic flight and our in flight entertainment was so good that it seemed a waste to fall asleep. We finally got to our hotel at 9pm on the Sunday evening and I certainly slept then - after almost 48 hours without sleep!

    We hesitated a long between San Francisco and Los Angeles to choose the place to begin our round trip in 2004.
    We noticed there are more direct flights from Paris to SF than to LA, mainly because a part of the flights to LA have a transfer in SF.
    There was also a light difference of price.
    So we landed in SF at the beginning of the afternoon, with a 9 hour time lag.
    Our choice was for United Airlines because we noticed they are often on time and because they have a good service especially the little indidual TV screens are very pleasant.
    Time : 11:30 (Paris - SF), 10:30 (SF - Paris)
    Price : 880 euros in June through Travelocity.
