Everyone knows San Francisco of course from the cable cars. Next to that SF houses the historical muni trams that run from Fisherman's Wharf all the way to the Castro district.

The cable cars are great, they only have one disadvantage, don't try to get on them at the starting point of the lines as there is a big waiting line of tourists. From Fisherman's Wharf there are two lines running towards the city. The least busy one is the Powel and Mason line, the Powel and Hyde line is a lot busier.

Of course, you have to ride it once hanging from the side of a cable car. Just watch out for parked busses and cars, their mirrors are hard........

Cable Cars: A must do - try go early in the morning
Everyone who's travelling to SF gets told to take a cable car. The biggest complaint is that the lines are long and there's usually not much space.

We solved that problem by taking an early morning cable car on a weekend. We caught the Hyde-Mason cable car at 820am. We also caught it at the second stop rather than at the turnaround. We still got great views and we had a seat on the benches in front.

Cable Cars: Cable Cars: people really do use these.
From what I understand, there are tourist cable cars and regular cable cars that everyday people use. There are some that seem very old, but restored and these are very cool. I spoke to one driver while he was on break and his had been brought over from Italy and had interior wood finishings. Very nice.

    Cable Cars: Cable Cars
It's a must, and it's a great one! You've seen it on TV so many times and it's even better than imagined.

I made the mistake and decided to take a ride in the afternoon, big mistake, I had to queue for an hour! But I got the place on the back platform, and it's an incredible experience to go up and down these steep hills.

For the trip from Ghiradelli Square to Union Square (roughly) I had to pay 3$ - a lot if you take it just for transportation, okay if you see it as an attraction.

Cable Cars: Take the cable car
It's part of San Franciscos history, so we wanted to take a cable care ride. It's actually expensive. We paid $ 5 for one way from Powell Street to Fisherman's Wharf. But from where the cable car stops, you still have to walk a few blocks to Fisherman's Wharf.
