Areas to Avoid: A few spots to be wary of
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've lived in SF most of my adult life. San Francisco is a relatively safe city, and, with common sense you should be just fine. Most of the places you're likely to go as a tourist are safe. However, here's a few places you should avoid. Hunters Point/Bayview - Never EVER go to the HP. Day or night it is extremely dangerous. Fotrunately, it's hard to get lost there - few buses go there, so it' unlikely you'll wind up there by mistake. There's only ONE reason, as a tourist, that you would go there, and that's to see the 49ers at 3Com. Stick to the main exits and don't try to drive thru the 'hood. Tenderloin - The TL isn't as bad as it used to be, but it should still be avoided at night. Some parts of it, like Turk Street just north of Market, should always be avoided. The bad blocks are pretty obvious - if it looks bad, turn around and find a different way. Market & 6th - This is one of the scummiest blocks in the city. Avoid it at all hours. SOMA from 4th Street towards downtown is relatively safe however. The main homeless area (their home) is around 7th & Market, heading towards City Hall. Haight Ashbury - Safe during the day, but LOTS of bums - calling them "homeless" is intellectually dishonest. Expect to be panhandled mercilessly. Simply smile and say "sorry" and keep walking. Do not make eye contact with anyone you don't want to have a rambling conversation with. Junkietown - the area near Golden Gate Park at the end of Haight Street near McDonald's - should be avoided at night. 16th & Mission - a major transportation hub but also a VERY scummy block. If you take BART to the 16/Mission station, go up the escalators, on to the plaza, and keep walking! Don't loiter around the plaza; all sorts of vermin hang out here. Things improve greatly just one block away.

San Francisco has more shopping carts than Walmart. They are almost always accompanied by homeless people who use the carts to carry around every possession they own. The homeless problem is out of control in San Francisco. This is the dark side of San Francisco. If you haven't been to SF recently, you should be prepared for this before your visit. The situation is far worse than in most other US cities. The homeless are everywhere in SF - even places that are considered safe areas. Most homeless people, however, are harmless. Some Do and Don'ts: Steer clear of the screamers and yellers. You don't want to take your chances by messing with them. Use your own judgment in giving handouts. San Franciscans are very opinionated about the homeless problem. Some believe people should not give handouts because it increases the dependency of the homeless, and they won't hesitate to express their opinion. If you are asked for a handout, whether you decide to give or not, express a kind greeting. All deserve respect and it is only by a stroke of luck that some of us are not out there standing in their shoes (myself included).

Control Yourself!: When on a Cable Car you better pay attention.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well in this picture you can see how close you get to some of the trucks parked on the streets There are white lines that mark the Cable Cars lets say space ,anyone parked over that white line has a good chance to loose a tail light or worse. And of course these backpacks ,be careful and look ahead ,not backwards for long because you might have a problem. But the bottom line is RIDING CABLE CARS IS FUN FUN FUN.

Control Yourself!: When on a Cable Car you better pay attention.
  • Tip Rating:
  • What I mean here if you are on the running boards of a Cable Car you better be aware because as you will see in the picture you will get very very close to Cars and trucks . I nearly got pulled of the Cable Car because my backpack got almost stuck . Enlarge the picture and you will see that people wear large backpacks on the Cable Car.

    Earthquakes: The truth about earthquakes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Inside of dome in City Hall, San Francisco - San Francisco
Inside of dome in City Hall,

I am often asked by people who live outside California "Aren't you worried about earthquakes?" The answer is no -- most residents of California hardly give earthquakes a second thought. Seismic reinforcement of structures in California is quite advanced. Major earthquakes do cause some damage, but when that happens, structures are rebuilt and reinforced, and made much stronger. City Hall is a good example. It was extensively damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (7.1 on the Richter Scale), but after years of reconstruction the entire building was strengthened to prevent that type of damage in the future. This picture shows the inside of the huge dome above the rotunda. The dome, which twisted four inches like a corkscrew in the 1989 earthquake, is now supported by 1,200 of steel near its top. In a future quake, the dome is designed to move with the building, preventing damage. The truth is, your odds of being injured in an earthquake in California are very, very slim. If you are still concerned and want to keep tabs on our recent earthquakes, click on the link below.

    People to Avoid: Check Yourself...
  • Tip Rating:
  • While there are bucketloads and bucketloads of reviews complaining about the homeless problem and the bushman :D, I'd like to take it one step further. 1. Don't buy drugs from anyone on Haight St. I know your mom told you not to. 2. Don' t think you should buy fake ID's on Mission Street. Also don't tell your friends you will meet them on Mission Street. Something bad might happen to you if you wait too long on the sidewalk in Mission looking lost and confused. 3. Don't pick up hookers on Capp Street. LOL. Actually, not too many hookers on that street. They seem to have moved east a bit. 4. The Italian food in North Beach is not made better by it being in a historically Italian neighborhood. Likewise, Chinese food in Chinatown isn't necessarily better. However Russian food might be better in the Richmond. 5. There are also many homeless, south of Market. Beware the opera guy (doesn't talk - only sings opera) and the handbag lady (she hits ladies with her purse from behind). Beware the pimps near 8th and Mission. Watch out for naked people at the Hole in the Wall on 8th St. 6. Be careful crossing the street in general. Pedestrians have the right of way, but that's only if you follow the rules. If you rent a car, be careful about bicycles and motorcycles. Knowledge is power! And knowing is half the battle. LOL. Ack... well I'm sure you'll have a greater chance of enjoying yourself if you avoid these things.

    Driving S.F.: One way streets

San Francisco is a complex network of narrow one way streets. Driving in the heavy traffic areas of San Francisco is tough, even for a local, which is why I rarely use anything but public transportation to get into the City. Not only do you have to watch out for pedestrians who cross against the light, cars pulling out of blind garages, other drivers talking on their cell phones, and double parked cars, you have to concentrate on which way the streets go, are they one way or two? It's enough to drive you to drink (but don't drink and drive)...

San Franciscans have a reputation for being really lousy drivers. Having lived here virtually my whole life, I can say that it is a very well-deserved reputation. It's not like in Boston with aggressive drivers. Quite the contrary - if you're driving aggressively, then at least you're paying attention! No, San Francisco drivers are just clueless. And the advent of the cell phone has not helped matters. 9 out of 10 times you see someone doing something really stupid in a car, they are on a cell phone! And if you are one of those people who drive yapping on your phone, don't assume that I'm talking about the other guy! Chances are you've been in several close calls and were too busy gabbing away to notice! Shut up and drive! In San Francisco, a yellow light means drive like hell, because the light's about to turn red! Red light running is a way of life here, unfortunately, and you should exercise caution both driving and walking - especially in the Castro District, where drivers are notoriously stupid (even by SF standards). Things have definitely become more uncivil on the roads in the past decade. The primary cause is that many freeways were torn down because of earthquake damage, and, thanks to SF's liberal squabbling and Willie Brown's cronyism, it is now 15 freakin' years later and all that traffic is still choking city streets! The Octavia Street off-ramp and boulevard project has relieved some of the pressure, but if you drive in the northeast quadrant of the city, you should expect heavy traffic.

    Weather: Changing Weather
  • Tip Rating:
  • The day can start out hot in Pacifc Heights, and by 2pm be absolutely freezing on the Golden Gate Bridge. The winds come off the water and make it really cold and uncomfortable rather quickly. Dresss in layers and always bring a jacket and more sweaters than you think you need. In the afternoons and evenings it starts to get cold. The Golden Gate bridge can be freezing with it's windy conditions even on a lovely day. Fishermans' wharf can also be cold due being right on the water.

Areas to Avoid: BART at Night can be a little scary
  • Tip Rating:
  • Try to stay away from the Oakland BART station at night. It's very deserted, I mean no one around. I felt very vulnerable at 8:30 at night coming back from Berkley. On Sunday's there are no direct trains from Berkley to San Francisco, so you have to transfer at the Oakland or McCarthur station. the Oakland station did not feel safe at night. The area around the Powell BART Station also felt very precarious at best at nightime.
